Albertans just received a giant lump of coal before Christmas from the UCP government. Alberta's two energy ministers announced today that they want to increase coal mining in Alberta. This announcement gives us no economic benefit and a lot of environmental risk, a lot of pollution, a lot of challenges for our watershed, a lot of risks to our agricultural industry, and it just shows once again the UCP is a political movement that has no interest in actually being a government. More than 900 Albertans will lose their jobs, and Alberta’s Premier is simply “disappointed” with thoughts and prayers for good severance packages? Premier, that’s 900 families impacted once these workers receive the pink slip. Alberta has one of the worst unemployment rates in the country. How are the 900 Albertans going to find new jobs? Your UCP government chased away $33 billion dollars of investments in 118 renewables projects that would have brought 24,000 jobs. It then continued with an unfathomable witch hunt on the renewables projects that practically stopped the growth of new jobs in that sector over the last two years. What’s the plan here, Premier? This Imperial layoff is not the exception; it is an increasing pattern. There are more mergers and consolidations in the oil sands sector, and the 2020 merger of Husky and Cenovus was a prime example that resulted in the loss of 2150 office jobs. In 2023, Suncor also cut ~1500 jobs in Alberta, citing the need for better financial performance and more efficiency. Imperial’s own press release says: “Leverages technology and global capability centres to deliver increased value” with “Expected annual expense savings of $150 million.” The UCP government has failed to act and prepare for the reality that is upon us. The sector is becoming highly automated and more efficient with the implementation of technology, which means less jobs available for Albertans. The question is, what is this government going to do right now to support the 900 Albertans losing their jobs? What’s the government’s plan to prepare and re-orient this highly skilled labour force for the future? And most importantly, how is the Premier caught off guard in this way? And will the Premier shut down the separation nonsense to bring back investor certainty in our province? Albertans deserve an actual plan for Alberta’s economy #ableg

4000 oil and gas wells just became orphans, doubling Alberta’s total – overnight! This is the largest single dump of liabilities Alberta has ever seen. Companies have a legal obligation to clean up their sites, yet taxpayers are once again being left with the bill. Albertans and landowners deserve transparency and accountability, yet the minister’s answer is insulting to taxpayers #ableg #abpoli

The Alberta Energy Regulator needs to be a regulator - not a political arm with the Premier’s friends and insiders. The minister tells me they "don't hire friends." Well, that's not what public record tells us. My office regularly receives desperate pleas for help from landowners. Alberta is facing a crisis in oil and gas liabilities’ cleanup. Instead of keeping promises to Alberta landowners, many companies declare bankruptcy after they’ve made profits, leaving massive junk wells on private lands. Many companies respect landowners, but there are bad actors. The regulator has the power to stop bad actors, but the UCP continuous political interference in the AER isn’t helping. There are good technical folks working in the regulator and they want to do the right thing. Let them do their jobs. Albertans deserve a regulator that’s independent, transparent, and focused on protecting Albertans and the public interest. #ableg #abpoli

Albertans in #yycglenmore tell me that we have a UCP government disconnected from their priorities. They want the provincial government to focus on delivering well funded classrooms, bringing more doctors and shortening waiting times while focusing on the economy and creating jobs - and to quit the distractions of cultural wars, separation, and ridiculous license plates with citizenship status. Maybe the UCP should start governing - for change #ableg

In the wee hours of the morning, the UCP government passed its legislation to force teachers back to work. They even used the notwithstanding clause, admitting their violation of charter rights and freedoms. What’s most worrisome? Alberta kids are now returning to the same overcrowded classrooms with unsupported complexity after three weeks of failed UCP negotiations. As a parent, I want the best education outcome for every child in our province. Every parent I’ve spoken to and received emails from in Glenmore wants the same. Write to these UCP MLAs and the premier. Tell them what you think. Put on the pressure. Albertans deserve much better than this. Five years after the UCP scrapped plans for market reforms designed specifically to prevent shortages, Albertans saw record high bills and rolling blackouts. My question is simple: Why after five years has this Premier been unable to keep the lights on? #ableg #abpoli
