The Nancy & Lee duet, “Some Velvet Morning,” is widely regarded as one of the greatest duets of all time. In fact, it topped London’s Daily Telegraph’s 2003 list of the 50 Greatest Duets Ever. The song is anything but conventional, featuring dramatic shifts in time signature from 4/4 to 3/4 that add to its distinctive, dreamlike quality. Lee originally wanted to record the two parts separately and splice them together, but the band, which included Don Randi, Carol Kaye, and Hal Blaine, insisted they could handle the tricky changes. What you hear on record was recorded in one take! In this clip, my buddy Don Randi talks about the recording of this iconic song. From fighting to stay with a label that had no interest in me as an artist, to recording an ultimately shelved album with Lee Hazlewood, to his sudden and unannounced departure for Sweden, my last few years on Reprise Records were turbulent, to say the least. After Lee removed himself from my life, I was left to pick up the pieces and forge ahead with my buddy, Billy Strange. Together, we created Nancy, my final album released by Reprise. Producer Hunter Lea has put together a short film about this time in my career, entitled The Story of Nancy, which will premiere on my YouTube Channel on Sunday, November 30th at 5pm PST/8pm EST. My beloved mother was a gem, an icon. She was my best friend and my biggest supporter. She gave me life, and she was the light of mine. She was a blessing to me and to anyone who knew her. She went to heaven eight years ago today. I was fortunate to have her in my life for 78 years, yet nothing could have prepared me for the depth of grief her passing would bring. I still haven’t gotten over losing her, and I don’t think I ever will. I know we’re only just passing through, and I believe death is not the end. Energy never dies, but letting go is so hard. I’ll love you always and miss you forever, Mama. Not a day goes by that I don’t think of you. Until we meet again. If you’re fortunate enough to still have your mother, hold her close. Tell her you love her. Cherish every moment you have together, because one day she will be gone and those moments will become priceless memories.

Friends, I am excited to announce that Light in the Attic's Nancy Sinatra Archival Series is back on track! Next up is my 1969 album, Nancy, which will be released on December 5th. I know my epitaph will read, “Here lies Frank Sinatra’s daughter, who died with her boots on,” but I’ve recorded many other wonderful albums. Nancy is one of those. The album came together during a challenging time in my career after Barton Lee abandoned me to move to Sweden. However, Billy Strange and I created a terrific record that truly represented who I was at that time. Unfortunately, the label did the bare minimum promotion-wise, so it didn’t gain the attention it deserved, but I’m thrilled the album is now getting a new lease on life. I hope you all love it as much as I do. Pre-order Nancy on CD, vinyl, and a limited edition signed test pressing from Nancy's Bootique. 👉

Ruth Buzzi (RUTH BUZZI) was a comedic genius. Working alongside her on Laugh-In was the most fun I ever had working. I treasured her friendship and I am heartbroken to wake up to the news that she is gone. I love you, Ruthie. Godspeed, old friend. Sending condolences to her husband Kent and to all who loved her. Remembering happy times with Ruthie, as well as Goldie Hawn, Teresa Graves, and Joanne Worley on Laugh-In.

On billboard Magazine’s Hot 100 chart dated February 26, 1966, “These Boots Are Made For Walkin’” became my first #1 hit. Over the years the song has taken on a life of its own. It’s like being associated with a brand. EVERYBODY knows “Boots!” Even now people send me videos of their small children singing and dancing to it. If I have any complaints, it’s that history has rewritten me as a one-hit-wonder. That I hate. “These Boots Are Made For Walkin’” was part of my stage show, The Nancy Sinatra Show, and was featured in the filmed version, Movin’ With Nancy On Stage in 1971. This clip hasn’t been seen in over 50 years.

Thinking of my old pal, Elvis, on his birthday. He was a sensitive and caring man with a heart full of love. He was also a funny man, one of the funniest I've ever known. Oh, god, how I miss him. Happy birthday, Crazy. I wish you were here to celebrate your birthday with us, but I hope you're celebrating big wherever you are in the Universe. Love you always, Nasty.

“Sugar Town” isn’t one of my favorites of my records, but it hit the top 5 and became one of my biggest hits. Putting together an album around it proved to be quite the challenge. “Sugar Town” was basically LSD, but wasn’t publicized as such. It was Lee’s “Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds.” The song went against my image, which made it tough to choose songs for the same collection. In the end we decided to go with Dixieland Jazz standards standards and called the album Sugar. My friend, Ron Joy, shot the cover photo. I thought wearing a bikini by the beach was kind of commonplace, but a bikini in ugly weeds, a little kookie. I wanted something that was different because I knew the idea of a bikini on an album cover would be shocking in the first place. A screen was placed over the photo because it was way too graphic for the day. It was pretty much the first of its kind and the label was afraid of it. The bikini is tame by today’s standards, but when the album came out it was quite provocative. In fact, it was banned in Boston! A newly remastered Sugar joins Light in the Attic’s Nancy Sinatra Archival Series on November 29. Preorder CD and vinyl: 👉

When Lee Hazlewood heard the version of “You Only Live Twice” I recorded in London with John Barry, he said it was great but not very commercial. So, we went into the studio to re-record it with The Wrecking Crew for the single. This week, Hunter Lea explores the multitrack for the single version of “You Only Live Twice, with studio chatter from Lee, Billy, and moi. Which version of the song is your favorite?

Happy Heavenly Birthday to my old duet partner, Mel Tillis! In 1981, I was struggling, recording countless demos, trying to find something people would like. Then my pal Jimmy Bowen came to the rescue once again by pairing me with Mel. The chemistry was instant, and we had a wonderful time making our album together. Mel & Nancy is one of the best albums I’ve ever done and remains a fan favorite. I m-m-miss you, M-M-Mel. Thank you for everything. 💕

My self-titled album was released 20 years ago on this date! The project began with a call from my pal Morrissey, telling me he had written a song for me and if I recorded it I would be on the charts for the first time since 1972. That song was “Let Me Kiss You.” (1/5)

Today hurts in the same way it always does since you left, Frankie, but I’m celebrating your life—the memories, the mischief, and the bond we shared. I miss your laugh, your courage, and the way you made everything more fun just by being there. You left us far too soon, a loss I feel every day, but your impact on my life is forever. There are no words that can fully capture how much I miss you, and even though I can’t give you a card or a hug, I’m sending all my love to heaven today. Happy birthday, Uncle Funny. I’ll never stop missing you. Never.

Today, I celebrate not only a decorated soldier, but a wonderful man and dear friend, Captain Frank Livolsi. Frank was a Captain with the Army's 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment (The Blackhorse) and my escort officer when I toured Viet Nam. Frank was a true American hero whose courage, leadership, and devotion to his fellow soldiers earned him many commendations, including the Purple Heart, Bronze Star with Oak Leaf Cluster, Army Commendation Medal for Valor, Republic of Viet Nam Gallantry Cross with Palm, National Defense Service Medal, Viet Nam Service Medal, and Viet Nam Campaign Medal. Beyond his remarkable military service, Frank was a loyal friend whose strength, kindness, and character left a lasting impression on everyone fortunate enough to know him. I will always be grateful for the time we shared and for our friendship that endured until the very end. Happy Birthday in Heaven, My Captain. I love you. ❤️🇺🇸

Near the end of my tenure with Reprise Records, anti-war music was taking over the industry, and the label began pressuring me to go that route but after touring Viet Nam and having seen the horrors of that war up close, I was not prepared to go there. The sights, sounds and smells are still with me today. I recorded songs that I was comfortable with, such as “Home” and “It’s Such a Lonely Time of Year,” which I feel were every bit as, or more effective than songs like “Eve of Destruction.” “It’s Such a Lonely Time of Year” was recorded for our family Christmas album, The Sinatra Family Wish You a Merry Christmas in 1968. A few months before the album’s release, I performed it on The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hours, with slightly altered lyrics. While the song was written during the Viet Nam war, its’ message of separation and loss is universal and can apply to many situations. Friends, Christmas is a season of hope, so if you’re struggling, please don’t lose heart. Stay the course. With faith and love in your heart, your life can change in ways you may not yet see. As my dad always said, take it two minutes at a time. May God bless you all.
