The speed and shocking agility with which this East Siberian brown bear 🐻 in Khakassia, Russia 🇷🇺 swims and climbs a steep hill demonstrates that you always need to remember you’re in its home (not the other way around) and remain alert. (The bear looks black out of the water, but it has a characteristic brown bear hump and a pointed nose.)

“[The Europeans] have gone so far as to label us their enemies—the future destroyers of European civilization.” - Dostoyevsky (Diaries, January 1877) The more things change, the more they stay the same. Full quote from the clip: “We adopted European tastes—we even ate all sorts of nasty things, trying not to wince—as if to say, ‘Look at me, what a true Englishman I am; I can’t eat a thing without cayenne pepper!’ Do you think I’m joking? Not at all.” [….] “We could never quite explain to them that we didn’t want to be simply Russians, but rather ‘universal human beings.’ Lately, however, they’ve begun to grasp something. They’ve realized that we are after something—something they find frightening and dangerous. They’ve realized that there are a great many of us—eighty million—and that while we know and understand all European ideas, they know nothing of our Russian ideas, and even if they were to learn of them, they wouldn’t understand them. They’ve realized that we speak all their languages, while they speak only their own—and they’ve begun to suspect and comprehend a great deal more. In the end, they’ve gone so far as to label us their enemies—the future destroyers of European civilization. That is how they have interpreted our passionate goal to become ‘universal human beings’!”

Japan’s Kishida talking about the danger of Russia repeating a nuclear weapons catastrophe while standing in the US Congress, the only country to use nukes—ON JAPAN—has got to be the highest level of gaslighting, self-deceit, and lackeyism all at once.

Disney this, Disney that. 🥱 Soviet animation produced many superb films, like the 1957 SNOW QUEEN by Soyuzmultfilm. ❄️ Did you know that it was THIS film that inspired Hayao Miyazaki? “Had I not one day seen The Snow Queen during a film screening hosted by the company labor union, I honestly doubt that I would have continued working as an animator,” Miyazaki later revealed. He called The Snow Queen “my destiny and my favorite film.” The film, directed by Lev Atamanov, is over an hour long and stylistically contains both realistic and fantastical features. It is based on the 1844 fable "The Snow Queen" penned by Hans Christian Andersen and is one of the earliest film adaptations of this Danish story. This classic masterpiece was released in several languages. In the U.S., it was first made available by Universal. Ghibli Museum Library later released it in Japan.
