I visited the Kurdish Sheikh Maqsoud neighborhood in Aleppo. My impressions: 📌 The Assad regime mistreated the Syrian Kurds and put them in a ghetto-like area. 📌 The YPG/SDF did nothing to improve services, daily life for Kurds, and forced them to live in such miserable conditions. ➡️ Kurds deserve better than this

The Syrian army reached the gate of Raqqa city. If they move in and take the city, the SDF will lose most of its leverage. The smart think to do would be to announce a complete withdrawal from all Arab-majority areas of Syria and to negotiate local security and local governance rights for Kurdish-majority areas. But I somehow doubt the YPG-dominated SDF can be that realistic and pragmatic.

US forces have returned back to Ayn al Arab which was handed over to Russia in 2019. Russia recently withdrew from that area. After five years of Russian protection, now CENTCOM again tries to protect the YPG. The insistence of CENTCOM and Brett McGurk to safeguard the YPG not only harms US interests in the region, but also undermines the incoming Trump administration's bargaining position.

A first step: The Syrian Internal Security Forces have entered Hasakah city and the countryside of Ayn al Arab (Kobane). So far, the Syrian security forces still haven't entered any Kurdish area. The deal remains fragile and prone to many potential tensions. But there is also hope that all may be resolved peacefully without major complications.

The Kurdish neighborhood of Sheikh Maqsoud was not destroyed by the war, but by neglect. It's very frustrating to see how little the YPG-dominated SDF cared about ordinary Kurds. They controlled the neighborhood for 14 years, but didn't invest a penny for the people.

I think it tells a lot when many Syrian media activists don't report on what Ahmad al-Shara said today about how to treat POWs: "What separates us from our enemies is our commitment to our principles. When we compromise our morality, we become our enemies on some level, and the remnants of the fallen regime look for an instigation to cause a violation that they can plead behind. I remind you that Allah has made the status of the prisoner the same as the orphan and the needy: 'And they give food to the poor, the orphan and the captive, out of love for him.' He [Allah] has made it a position of kindness and compassion, so the prisoner should not be humiliated or beaten, because that is against Allah's command and then the law of the state."

The joy of Syrian civilians after being liberated from the YPG-dominated SDF. They welcome the Syrian army with joy and happiness. Many more in northeastern Syria want the Syrian army and the Syrian government to take over control. This basic demographic and social reality is the biggest weakness of the one party totalitarian system of the SDF.

While the YPG continues to commit war crimes against Syrian Arabs, hundreds of foreign fighters rush into YPG-held parts of Syria. The YPG leader Mazloum Abdi signed a deal according to which the Syrian army wouldn't enter Kurdish areas of northeastern Syria, and among other things non-Syrian militants in the YPG would leave Syria. In short: It will be the fault of the YPG if the current ceasefire collapses and the Syrian army enters Kurdish-majority areas of northeastern Syria.
