On the western leg of PKU's 2026 China Deep Dive program, US students sat down for hot pot, explored the flavors of spicy and numbing cuisine, and wandered through a lively Chinese night market. Along the way, they discovered something beyond the food itself: in China, eating is often about gathering, sharing and enjoying the moment together.

From May 17 to 25, the 2026 "Harvard Deep Dive in China—Peking Univ." program brought students from Harvard University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) across Beijing, Shenzhen, and Guizhou for an immersive journey through contemporary China. Across factories, classrooms, laboratories, historic landmarks, and mountain valleys, the journey unfolded into a multidimensional exploration of contemporary China. Through conversation, observation, and shared experiences, participants encountered a country far more diverse, dynamic, and layered than any single narrative could capture. Back in 1987, how did people in Chongqing cross the swift and mighty Yangtze River? The answer is a cableway that soars above the waves, connecting the two banks. Such a symbol of human ingenuity in the face of challenging terrain reminded Carolin from PKU Guanghua of her hometown, Heidelberg, Germany.
