ANNOUNCEMENT TOLEDO MUSEUM OF ART ACQUIRES ABYSSINIAN QUEEN NFT BY YATREDA ያጥሬዳ The museum has purchased the work using cryptocurrency on the Ethereum blockchain, the first time a major institution has made an acquisition of this kind. The Toledo Museum of Art (TMA) announces the acquisition of Abyssinian Queen by Yatreda ያጥሬዳ, the first work purchased by the museum in cryptocurrency. The work was purchased using a USD-stable coin called USDC, and the transfer will be made on the Ethereum blockchain. This acquisition marks the first time a major cultural institution has utilized cryptocurrency to purchase work for its collection. Abyssinian Queen is a unique, 1-of-1 NFT created from a single-channel video. The work is part of a series of four NFTs also titled “Abyssinian Queen,” recently on view in the House of Yatreda immersive installation within TMA’s Ethiopia at the Crossroads exhibition. The exhibition closed on November 10. Another work from the series, The Queen’s Guard, 2024, will be sold by Christie’s as part of the fall Christie’s 3.0 digital art sale, taking place online from December 4 through 17, 2024. This acquisition will diversify TMA’s growing digital art collection as it is the museum's first purchase of a work by Yatreda ያጥሬዳ, the digital artist collective based between Ethiopia, Kenya, and the United States, and TMA Labs’ 2024 Digital Artist in Residence. TMA also plans to acquire a digital artwork by Toledo-based Jordan Buschur, TMA Lab’s 2024 Community Digital Artist in Residence. Buschur and Yatreda ያጥሬዳ worked alongside one another throughout the residency, and their works will join TMA’s collection of works by 2023 Digital Artists in Residence Osinachi and Yusuf Lateef. “Abyssinian Queen is a welcome addition to our growing digital art collection,” said Adam Levine, Edward Drummond and Florence Scott Libbey President, Director and CEO of the Toledo Museum of Art. “The work connects with our historic holdings in meaningful ways while also contributing to our ongoing efforts to support the evolving digital arts ecosystem. When we buy a new artwork from a French gallery, we pay in euros; when we buy from an English auction house, we pay in pounds. In this case, we are purchasing from the web3 artist collective Yatreda ያጥሬዳ, so it only made sense to try to transact in their preferred currency.” Abyssinian Queen pays homage to the legendary queens of ancient Ethiopia, vividly bringing to life the rich history and folklore passed down through generations as cultural memory, now preserved in perpetuity on the blockchain. In Yatreda’s signature slow-motion, black-and-white format, the artwork showcases the queen journeying across ancient Ethiopia, carried and escorted by her devoted attendants. Vigilant guards stand watch, protecting the queen and her entourage within the lush, ancient forest. Adorned in traditional jewelry that reflects her exalted status and impressive lineage, the queen sits aloft on a throne strewn with grass—a symbol of fertility and renewal. As she moves between lands and kingdoms, she enacts the careful diplomacy for which she is known, a measured display of leadership and grace. The “Abyssinian Queen” series marks a new direction in Yatreda’s artistic practice. It moves away from recorded Ethiopian history and draws instead from Ethiopian cultural memory and the childhood imaginings of Kiya Tadele, founder and creative director of Yatreda ያጥሬዳ, and her sister, Roman Tadele. For Yatreda ያጥሬዳ, this turn towards the fantastical serves as a therapeutic counterbalance to the challenge of modernization, and blockchain ensures the lasting celebration and preservation of their Ethiopian heritage. "We are deeply honored by the Toledo Museum of Art’s decision to welcome a Yatreda ያጥሬዳ artwork into their permanent collection—an artwork that remains pure to the collective memory of my family and my country,” said Tadele. “What makes this moment truly remarkable is the museum’s recognition that Ethiopian art is not simply a collection of ancient artifacts but a living narrative. By embracing the blockchain as a modern canvas for this evolving story, the TMA team is pioneering a bold direction for institutions worldwide. We are deeply grateful to walk together down this path with TMA."

Olori Atuwatsé III, Queen Consort of the Warri Kingdom posted on her official IG page; At the Nigerian Pavilion of the London Design Biennale, we stepped into a future anchored in memory, where heritage spoke through design, and technology carried the rhythm of tradition. It was a privilege to share this moment with His Majesty Ògíamẹ̀ Atuwatsé III CFR, The Olú Of Warri Kingdom. Within Somerset House, among the world's leading designers and thinkers, Nigerian creativity stood with confidence, layered, intentional, and deeply expressive. Titled Hopes and Impediments, the pavilion drew from Lejja's ancient iron-working legacy in Enugu State and reimagined Nigeria's cultural identity through sound, material, and mapping. The Itsekiri story ran through the centre, present with dignity, purpose, and clarity. Allegra Ayida's Paddling into the Past brought soul to form. Her work with the Itsekiri cast iron paddle offered a compelling reflection on memory and place, showing how language, names, and cultural rhythm continue to shape identity. The experience was fully immersive, brought to life through artificial intelligence, augmented reality, and data visualisation. Art met code. Culture meets interface. And from that meeting, something unmistakably African emerged: intelligent, modern, and deeply human. This vision was led by Myles Igwebuike as curator and creator, and produced by Itohan Barlow, founder of Culture Lab Africa. Together, they shaped a powerful cultural statement that resonated far beyond the walls of the exhibition. I'd like to express my gratitude to Victoria Broackes, Angela Bourderye-Munoz, Fiyin Adesanya, Dr. Anino Emuwa, Alero Ogbemi-Barlow, and the Itsekiri guests whose presence gave the moment its weight. Africa stands at the frontier. With memory, voice, and vision, we are shaping the future.

🇸🇾✝️ Maaloula (or Ma‘lūlā) is a historic town in Syria, renowned for its cultural and religious significance. It is located about 56 kilometres northeast of Damascus, perched in the rugged mountains at an altitude of over 1,500 meters. Here are some notable features about Maaloula: Aramaic Language: Maaloula is one of the few places in the world where some of its inhabitants still speak Western Aramaic, the language spoken by Jesus Christ. Efforts have been made to preserve this ancient language, though it is increasingly endangered. Monastery of Saint Sergius and Bacchus (Mar Sarkis): This ancient monastery dates back to the 4th century and is named after two Roman soldiers who became Christian martyrs. It features early Christian architecture and houses relics and altars from pre-Christian times. Monastery of Saint Thecla (Mar Takla): Dedicated to Saint Thecla, a follower of Saint Paul who, according to tradition, sought refuge in Maaloula. The site is said to house her tomb. It is a popular pilgrimage destination for those seeking healing and blessings. Unique Architecture: The town’s houses are built into the cliffs and exhibit traditional Syrian architecture, blending harmoniously with the natural landscape. Conflict and Damage: In recent years, Maaloula suffered during the war, with damage to its historic sites and displacement of its population by the 'rebels'. Efforts have since been underway to restore its ancient structures and revive its cultural heritage. Recent reports and video evidence reveal a devastating situation in the historic town of Maaloula. Under targeted attacks and harassment by Turkish-backed HTS militias, this cultural treasure faces grim challenges. The actions of these sectarian militants appear aimed at displacing and ethnically cleansing the Christian community that has called Maaloula home for centuries. This sacred town, known for its harmony and heritage, is in urgent need of attention and support. Let us stand in solidarity with Maaloula and its people during this difficult time. Spread awareness and keep this historic town in your thoughts. Video Source: Amazing Places on Our Planet

Press statement from the Office of King Bulelani Lubengula Mzilikazi 👇🏿👇🏿 Public Statement in Response to Remarks by Government Officials Regarding His Majesty’s Visit to Bulawayo. Date: 4 May 2025 The Office of His Majesty King Bulelani Lobengula kaMzilikazi, based in the Republic of South Africa, has taken note of recent public statements made by the Minister of Local Government and Public Works, Hon. Daniel Garwe, and ZANU PF Spokesperson Mr. Christopher Mutsvangwa, concerning His Majesty’s visit to the City of Bulawayo and his courtesy engagement with the Mayor, Councillor David Coltart. While we understand and respect the importance of dialogue and the rule of law within a sovereign nation, we find it imperative to address the tone and implications of the said statements with the necessary dignity and clarity. 1. Legitimacy and Representation His Majesty King Bulelani Lobengula kaMzilikazi holds a deeply rooted ancestral and cultural position within the hearts of the uMthwakazi people, as a direct descendant of King Lobengula, and ultimately of King Mzilikazi, the founder of the Ndebele nation. His role is not political but restorative, cultural, and symbolic—aimed at uniting Mthwakazi descendants across Southern Africa and the diaspora through heritage, identity, and community development. 2. The Nature of the Visit His Majesty’s visit to Bulawayo was in no way a political event or an act of defiance. It was a private and dignified cultural pilgrimage to the historical heartland of the Ndebele people—a journey marked by mutual respect, peaceful engagement, and cultural significance. His meeting with Mayor David Coltart was conducted in a spirit of courtesy and national unity, reflective of our African tradition of mutual recognition among community leaders. 3. Dignity in Public Discourse We respectfully urge public officials to exercise caution, decorum, and cultural sensitivity when speaking on matters of heritage and traditional leadership. Dismissive language or threats of arrest directed at a traditional and cultural figure—whose mission is reconciliation, unity, and empowerment—does not reflect the spirit of Ubuntu or the values enshrined in Pan-Africanism. 4. Commitment to Peace and Cultural Preservation The Kingdom reiterates its commitment to peaceful engagement, cultural restoration, and respectful cooperation with both governmental and civil institutions. We believe that co-existence between traditional structures and state governance is not only possible but necessary for a more inclusive and reconciled future. 5. The Call for Dialogue We remain open to constructive dialogue with all relevant stakeholders in Zimbabwe and the region to find common ground in the recognition and preservation of traditional institutions that predate colonial boundaries. These institutions, when embraced and integrated, can contribute meaningfully to community development, national unity, and cultural tourism. Conclusion We would like to thank all the citizens of the country who have shown their undivided support to the King, The Kingship issue, The Mayor of the City of Bulawayo and the Culture of our Mthwakazi Nation . It has clearly demonstrated that “Inkosi YiNkosi Ngabantu” . We call upon all concerned to embrace a spirit of mutual respect, understanding, and dialogue in addressing matters concerning the cultural identity of the Mthwakazi people. His Majesty’s presence is not an imposition, but a reminder of a shared aspiration and history that yearns for healing, dignity, and recognition. Issued by: Office of His Majesty King Bulelani Lobengula kaMzilikazi Republic of South Africa
