Mike Atherton (98*) and Alex Stewart (45*) touch gloves as they take the winning runs, England v SA, 4th Test, Trent Bridge, July 27th 1998. England chased down 247 for the loss of two wickets but not without controversy ...this was just out and out absorbing cricket. Had first slip learned how to click on cue though ...

Forty-five years ago today ... a fortnight after Ian Botham's heroics at Leeds, Australia were on course to take a 2-1 series lead as they reached 87 for 3 chasing 151 in the 4th Test at Edgbaston, August 2nd 1981. John Emburey took two vital wickets and then came Botham Part 2. Those of us at home had to rely on the radio to follow it. We only had three channels in those days with two on the BBC. Grandstand, on BBC2, did not cover this live as the German Grand Prix was taking place, so we all had to listen to it on TMS and then wait for the 'as live' pictures a little later. BBC1 was showing a 1933 film on climbing Everest

Can only assume this was a management/ PR decision. If so, add it to the list of things they have got wrong this tour

If anyone questions how brilliant Championship cricket can be ... an amazing final day ended with Glamorgan, chasing a world record 593 to beat Gloucestershire, on 592 for 9 as the last ball was bowled. One to win, one wicket for a tie, with a draw also possible ...

The final day of the 1968 Oval Test, best remembered for rain, Derek Underwood, and a gripping finale. I am not that familiar with this footage, narrated by John Arlott. And in days of no helmets or any other protection, some almost suicidal close fielding and amazing catching

Fascinating clip of Larwood v Bradman from the Bodyline series. With Larwood's accuracy and speed - plus almost no protection for the batsman - you can see how hard this was to play and why Bradman swayed inside the line as much as he could (NFSA Australia)
