The only real emotional negative for me in EVIL DEAD BURN - and it isn't really a negative in terms of horror - is Thya's murder in the car after her boyfriend's father is possessed. It's extremely violent, but it feels genuinely hateful. Like he's killing her out of pure spite. I don't want to say misogynistic, because it has nothing to do with gendered violence, but the way it's choreographed and acted feels uncomfortably personal. It made me feel genuinely uneasy both in the cinema and rewatching it at home. Usually, the kills in this franchise are awesome horror movie deaths, but something about the way this one was shot and acted just felt off. Does anybody else get what I'm saying? For context:

Luciane Buchanan brought a distinct blend of humor and cunning to the role of Thya. Her interaction with Polly - acknowledging her dementia by tapping her forehead and saying, 'aww… so broken in here' - offered a brilliant, perhaps unintended, contrast between intimidating terror and a flash of genuine empathy. I’m gonna say it. Bedtime Stories is Madonna’s best album. People were so butthurt over her Sex book and the Erotica era that they tried to punish her for it, which is the only reason this album peaked at number 3 in America. But musically? She won. She gave us immaculate vocals, smooth late-night R&B, and absolute sophistication from start to finish. And nobody ever talks about "Sanctuary", which is a crime because it is a masterpiece. The track feels so incredibly forbidden. The melody creates this heavy, atmospheric vibe where you feel like you aren't even supposed to be listening to it - it is so deeply sexual, intimate, and explicit without needing to shout about it. From the hypnotic energy of "Sanctuary" to the effortless middle finger of "Human Nature", it is her most cohesive, textured, and underrated body of work. A 90s masterpiece.
