Maatsen is an interesting alternative to Lewis Hall because the profiles are quite similar: both are modern, attacking-minded left-backs who are comfortable carrying the ball, combining in possession and pushing high up the pitch. On the ball he’s a carrier — he can take it from our box to theirs in 5 seconds, break the first press, and create overloads. Defensively he’s gotten way better at 1v1s and tracking runners, and tactically he’s smart enough to underlap or overlap depending on the game. Plug him in and suddenly our left side isn’t dead anymore. We get width, speed, and a 22 year-old who can grow with this team for the next decade.

Baleba can do everything Tchouaméni does and more. Tchouaméni has benefited massively from playing for Real Madrid, but now Baleba has the Manchester United platform. Give him time and you’re going to see a star emerge. The pace, physicality, ball-carrying and aggression he brings could completely change the dynamic of our midfield.

I watched Lewis Hall at Chelsea against Manchester City in the FA Cup, and even though Chelsea lost, he was one of the few bright spots. He looked fearless on the ball, carried it forward with confidence, and never seemed intimidated by the occasion. Fast forward to Newcastle, and his performance against Arsenal in the Premier League showed how much he has grown. He was outstanding defensively, constantly won his duels, supported attacks with intelligent overlaps, and looked completely at home in a high-intensity game. Manchester United should not miss out on this target.

Jean-Philippe Mateta makes a lot of sense as Sesko’s backup and genuine competition. At 29, he brings something United desperately need: experience without needing to be the main project. He can hold the ball up, bring teammates into play, attack crosses and finish with both feet and his head. If Sesko is better, he starts. If Mateta is in better form, he starts. That kind of internal competition is exactly what a serious squad needs.

Over a 60-game season, especially with Champions League football, you cannot expect the same midfield combination to control every type of game. Yesterday wasn’t proof that United’s midfield is bad. It was proof that the midfield still lacks balance. And that’s a much more important problem for INEOS to solve before the window closes. You can have midfielders who can pass, receive and progress the ball, but when the opponent breaks your first line, someone has to step across, make the recovery run, win the duel and stop the attack before it reaches the defence.
