This happens as long-term rates rise relative to short-term rates. Though they try to hold short rates down, long rates are climbing, a trend we are already seeing. We are also seeing a weakening dollar and movements in gold. As rates rise, it starts to affect the stock market. With bonds dropping and stocks rising, the prospective returns of stocks are now low compared to bonds, translating into broader stock market pressure. This classic dynamic creates a stagflationary environment that the Federal Reserve struggles to manage. With current stagflation, the Fed wrestles with whether to tighten or ease. In an economy with vast wealth disparity, the financial impact differs drastically depending on whether you own stocks, which carries huge political implications. #Stagflation #Macroeconomics #FederalReserve #StockMarket

You work your ass off to get a lot of money. But what is that money actually for? Money has no intrinsic value—it only matters if you have a clear purpose behind it. Will it get you better friends, a better marriage, or a better relationship with your kids? You better answer that question first. To me, real success isn’t about the money. Success is knowing your nature, finding the best path through that nature, and being able to look back and say, "That was the life I wanted to have." Let’s pause and reflect on a critical key to success: The people who think differently from you—and who you might ordinarily get annoyed with—are often the ones who complement your weaknesses. Finding people who balance your strengths and offer different perspectives is essential for building a successful partnership or team. Yes, we are past the point of no return. When debt service payments squeeze out spending, it is like plaque in the circulatory system squeezing out the flow of blood. It is the same kind of thing, and it can be measured. We are seeing that happen right now. There is also a supply and demand issue. A budget deficit means that debt has to be sold. We can see this happening in the bond market—bonds have been a bad investment, and there is pressure on interest rates and borrowing. This dynamic is happening, but people are treating it like it hasn't happened before. They don't understand that, just like plaque in the arteries, the debt builds up and they have that exposure.

When pain comes, it's easy to get hung up in it and skip reflection. Transcendental meditation has helped me make that transition since 1969. TM is a very simple exercise: you sit calmly and repeat a mantra in your head until all other thoughts fade away. This brings you into your subconscious mind—the space below logical awareness where emotions sit, calms you down, and where true creativity comes from. You can’t force great ideas to come through logic, but when you relax into that subconscious space, they flow naturally. Early on, I had to confront some major weaknesses. I have a terrible rote memory—I can't remember anything that doesn't have a clear reason for being what it is. Because of that, I was a bad student and I hated school. Details have always been a mess for me. To supplement my own shortcomings, I learned that I need to surround myself and work with people who are meticulous and detail-oriented. Beyond that, my early audaciousness came with a lot of arrogance—until I got the shit kicked out of me enough times to learn fear. But what I ultimately realized through that process is that your weaknesses don't really matter. What matters is recognizing them, finding the right people to compliment you, and learning from your mistakes. #Principles #SelfAwareness #RadicalTruth #RayDalio

When I talk with a "Shaper" like Elon Musk, what stands out is the ability to operate at both the big-picture level and the granular detail. I remember him walking me through the details of his car—from the screen to the button—and in the same breath talking about putting a watering can with a plant on a rocket to send to Mars just to establish "first life on Mars" and inspire people. True shapers naturally bridge the gap between grand vision and high-level execution. Credit: Sam Parr, Shaan Puri, and My First Million #RayDalio #ElonMusk #Vision #Leadership

While Bitcoin gets a lot of attention, it hasn’t played the safe-haven role many expected. In my view, there are a few reasons why. First, Bitcoin lacks privacy. Transactions can be monitored and potentially controlled, which is why central banks aren’t looking to hold it. Second, it also has a high correlation with tech stocks. When investors get squeezed in other areas of their portfolio, they sell their Bitcoin to cover it. Third, it’s a relatively small and controllable market, whereas gold stands alone. There is only one gold. Ultimately, gold is more widely held, deeply established, and still plays a central role in the global system.

In order to be successful, you have to do five things. There’s a sequence to it. 1. Have (audacious) goals. 2. Identify and don't tolerate problems. 3. Diagnose the problems to get at their root causes. 4. Design a path to fix those things. 5. Push through to results. This is what I call looping. Go for your goals, identify your problems, get to the root cause, design a path, and push through. Life is basically just doing that over and over again. If you do that, you'll make the advances. #Principles #RayDalio #PersonalGrowth

When starting out with no revenue, you have a choice. You can stay out of the jungle, take the safe path, and have a regular job. Or you can go into the jungle, face the things that can kill you, and reach for the upside. I made a choice about what I wanted in life—and I knew I wanted to go into the jungle with people who see things differently than I do, so we could navigate it together. After spending time in Washington, DC discussing the budget deficit with senior people on both sides of the aisle, it’s clear to me that we are unlikely to change the debt trajectory we’re on and avoid the painful consequences. While virtually everyone agrees on the need to address our debt problem in a balanced way that includes tax increases and cuts to benefits, they also agree that they cannot speak up because politics have become absolutist. We must find a solution around absolutist pledges like, ”I will not raise taxes,” or “I will not reduce benefits,” when they are desperately needed.

To collaborate successfully, you have to do three things: First, put your honest thoughts on the table for everybody to look at. Everyone's thoughts are different, and you have to be willing to look at them openly. Second, know the art of thoughtful disagreement. Ask yourself: how do you work through disagreements to get a better answer than you would have come up with individually? Third, if the disagreements remain, you have to have protocols for getting past that. In our case, we have an "idea meritocracy" through believability-weighted decision-making. When you have a system where the best ideas win out, the results are going to be so much better than if you just stuck with the ideas inside your own head. #Collaboration #IdeaMeritocracy #Teamwork #RayDalio

I’ve been practicing meditation for a long time, and it has easily been one of the most powerful things that’s helped me in my life. It provides an equanimity—almost like being a ninja. Everything slows down around you, and you are able to deal with whatever comes at you from a place of calm. More importantly, it opens up a connection between your conscious brain and your subconscious brain. That is where the magic is, because that is where all creativity is trapped. When you quiet your mind and move past the noise, you open up that channel. It’s a very simple exercise. If you ask me if I would be at the same level of success without it all these years, I don't believe I’d be close. #Meditation #Principles

The first stock I ever bought was the only company I’d heard of selling for under $5 a share. I stupidly believed that if I bought more shares, I’d make more money if it went up. It was about to go bankrupt, but another company acquired it and it tripled in price. I thought, "I like this game—it must be easy." Look at the Wall Street Journal with thousands of stocks; surely I can just pick one or two that go up! That's how I got started. It didn't take long to realize the game wasn't easy at all—but by then, I was completely hooked. Credit: Sam Parr, Shaan Puri, and My First Million #RayDalio #Investing #Markets #Mindset

I’m really excited about what’s going on with Digital Ray, which is my digital twin. I'm creating this so that everyone can have as much contact and as many conversations with me as they want—unlimited amounts, in the same sort of way that I do it. Eventually, it’s going to be a lot smarter than I am. This is all part of the evolutionary process. It’s still a bit experimental, but it really is something. If you want to have unlimited conversations with me, go online and try it. I also highly recommend taking the Principles You personality test. It’s online and only takes about 20 or 30 minutes. It will tell you all about your characteristics and inclinations. Integrating your assessment with Digital Ray allows for highly personalized guidance in Coach Mode, tailored to your unique needs across life and work. What makes a "Shaper"? It’s a unique personality type—people who are driven by the compulsive thrill of taking an idea from visualization to actualization. For these people, it’s not about security or making money; it’s about the thrill of the climb. When I look back at my life, reflect, and think about what has been best for me, I realize that the money, the track record, and the work we did for clients were all great. But the best part has still been the relationships. Those honest relationships are deeper and better because of tough love. Tough love is the best love because it comes from a place of truly caring. When people know that it is caring, and you couple that care with the tough truths, you can go through it together. That is incredibly powerful. In this video, you can see how meaningful these concepts are when put into practice. #ToughLove #RadicalCandor #Relationships #RayDalio

In 1971, the US ran out of money and defaulted on its debts. Now, they didn’t say it that way. But by moving away from the gold standard, money as we understood it ended. I expected the stock market to plunge, but it went on to rise nearly 25%. That surprised me. But when I looked into it, I discovered the exact same thing happened in 1933 and it had the exact same effect. Here’s why.

It's now happening. The existing fiat monetary order, the domestic political order, and the international geopolitical order are all breaking down, so we are at the brink of wars. It all is happening because of the Big Cycle that is driven by the five big forces I've described repeatedly and laid out in detail in my book and Youtube video titled Principles for Dealing with The Changing World Order. You can find the video linked in the comments below.

My view is that buying and holding real estate is not an effective investment strategy in our current economic environment, for a few reasons. 1) Real estate is more interest rate sensitive than it is inflation sensitive, so given our current circumstances it is likely to go down in real terms 2) It is a fixed asset that is easy to tax, which limits its impacts on your ability to diversify 3) Real estate is nailed down, so investing in it makes it more difficult to move money from one place to another That’s my view, in a nutshell. I’m curious to hear if you agree. #GovernmentDebt #debt #principles
