A construction site should not be sitting empty because workers are afraid to show up. Families in South Texas need housing, businesses need workers, and our communities need projects like this to move forward. I have long supported strong border security, but enforcement should be targeted at criminals and real threats to public safety. When workers are scared, projects get delayed, costs go up, and local economies feel it. We need smart, targeted enforcement that keeps our communities safe without hurting the workers, families, and businesses that help build South Texas.

Here’s the bottom line. The Republican-controlled government is pushing us toward a shutdown because they refuse to negotiate on critical health care tax credits. If Congress doesn’t act, premiums will more than double and families are already getting notices that their costs are set to skyrocket. Without action, a family of four making $125,000 would see their health care costs go up $7,700. A 60-year-old couple making $80,000 would pay $17,500 more. A family of four making $64,000 would pay $2,600 more. Republicans rushed to extend tax cuts for billionaires by July 4. Where is that urgency to help middle-class families, small business owners, veterans, and farmers who are deciding right now if they can afford coverage? I’m fighting to keep the government open, protect your health care, and make sure South Texans don’t get left behind. Watch my full explanation in the video below.

During today’s committee markup for the FY2027 Financial Services and General Government Appropriations bill, I advocated for my colleague Rep. Pete Aguilar’s amendment to allow DACA recipients, also known as Dreamers, to work in the federal government and recognize their contributions to our country. This comes down to fairness and responsibility. Dreamers did not break the law. Their parents brought them here, and this country shaped who they have become. They have earned degrees, served in uniform, and strengthened our economy, yet we still block them from opportunities to serve the very country they call home. That is wrong. If we are serious about fixing our immigration system, we should start with the young men and women who have built their lives here and stand ready to give back through public service every single day.
