Every time i pick up my banjo (made by Jim Hartel) I feel a lick or tune wanting to escape into the world. This is one of hundreds that come and go. I play this banjo, a replica of a banjo style from 1858, because it feels deeply cultural and spiritual to me.

Dropping another new song today feat. @JasonIsbell as my duet partner! "Yet To Be" is the story of a black woman and an Irish man falling in love in America. It's a story that has happened many times in our brutal, real, and undertold history. Listen:

An opportunity to lean into art music and beauty as those of us who weren’t surprised the nation showed itself nevertheless need the moment to feel sad.

Been working on a big project about early banjo music that has got me excited - been going through a lot of pieces from 1855 and thinking about the cultural soup this music came from - African/Irish/German/English/Indigenous etc etc etc -

Happy Juneteenth! Here’s “I Shall Not Be Moved” from Other Voices a few years back. In the wake of the last surviving members of the Tulsa Massacre being denied reparations, it’s a stark reminder of how far we have to go.

There’s nothing I love more than stripping things back for some old time jams. The sound you’re hearing comes from a gourd viola & banjo made by Menzies Instruments. They’re reproductions of instruments from the 1800s & with them they bring back the history & voices of our ancestors

Today marks 18 years since the Chocolate Drops released our debut album Dona Got a Ramblin' Mind. Dona Got a Ramblin’ Mind was the first record CCD made - we recorded it in a couple days I think in Chapel Hill many moons ago - right after we’d spent a month doing a bunch of school shows

I composed "Build a House" for the 155th anniversary of Juneteenth in 2020. It’s a proud view of our history. Today, and EVERY day, we honor that heritage. #Juneteenth Video by Noir Prism, filmed live from Tanglewood last year!

My cover of Nina Simone's "Black is the Color." Shot on the campus of Fisk University. The Fisk Jubilee Singers® were among the first African-American groups to tour America and Europe, and they kept their school from closing its doors with the money they raised with their singing.
