Democracy only has meaning if it protects everyone’s right to speak, not just those we agree with. In this video, a young man is manhandled and dragged away simply for expressing his support for President William Ruto serving two terms. The double standard is hard to ignore. When someone calls for a one-term presidency, it’s defended as freedom of expression. But when another person supports two terms, they are met with intimidation and violence. You don’t have to agree with someone’s political opinion to defend their right to express it. That’s what democracy is about. If we believe in free speech, then it must apply equally to every Kenyan, regardless of political affiliation. Let people express themselves peacefully, and let voters make the final decision at the ballot box, not through threats or force.
