Voting “no” is the easiest vote you can take in Washington because you don’t have to go home and explain it. Our political system rewards obstruction over progress — and voting “no” on everything is politically a safe choice. One of the things I loved most about being a U.S. Senator was working across with my colleagues on both sides of the aisle to find common ground and pass legislation that made our laws better than what they were before. But today, voting “yes” is seen as giving a win to the other side — a betrayal of your political party. There’s hardly a middle in Washington anymore because the parties force everyone to pick a side. When I voted on a bill, I didn’t care what person or party introduced the bill — I cared about whether or not it would help West Virginians. Despite the "D" I had by my name, West Virginians knew I would always vote in the best interests of my state, not a political party.
