Australia is seeking a seat on the UN Security Council for 2029-30. As an active, ambitious middle power, Australia has a practical contribution to make to international peace and security. We’ll listen with respect, partner as equals, protect civilians and defend the UN charter.

Hamas has no respect for international law, but we do. Civilians and hospitals in Gaza must be protected. We need steps towards a ceasefire, but it cannot be one-sided.

153 countries, including Australia, have already called for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire. Now many of Israel’s friends are expressing deep concerns about reports of an Israeli military operation in Rafah. This would have devastating consequences for civilians.

At a time like this, trusted friends matter more than ever. This week with Anthony Albanese I visited Malaysia, a vital trading partner. Australia is a trusted supplier of natural gas, and Malaysia is an important supplier of refined fuel. We rely on each other, and we’re stronger for it.
