This September 11 marks 25 years since our nation was forever changed. For a quarter century, Tribute in Light has served as a powerful symbol of remembrance, illuminating the New York City skyline in honor of the nearly 3,000 people whose lives were lost. This year, for the first time, people across the country will have the opportunity to witness the Tribute in Light together. Join us on Friday, September 11, at 8 PM ET for "9/11 Tribute in Light: Live from Lower Manhattan, presented by ABC News in partnership with the 9/11 Memorial & Museum." The special will air across ABC, Disney+, Hulu, National Geographic, and ABC NewsNewsLive, with live performances from Lainey Wilson, Cyndi Lauper, and John Ondrasik of Five For Fighting. Twenty-five years later, it is more important than ever that we come together to remember those we lost, honor their lives and legacy, and ensure that their stories are never forgotten.

Few understand what Ground Zero looked like in the days and weeks that followed. This footage captures the site on the night of September 11 and in the days immediately following the attacks, as smoke continued to rise from the massive pile of debris. The fires at Ground Zero did not end on September 11. Deep beneath the rubble of the World Trade Center, they continued to burn intensely for nearly 100 days, with hot spots still being detected into December 2001. During that time, firefighters, construction workers, engineers, and recovery crews worked around the clock in hazardous conditions. As smoke and heat continued to emerge from the ruins, they searched for survivors, recovered victims, and undertook the enormous task of clearing the site.
