Treaty 8 Grand Chief Trevor Mercredi responds to Premier Danielle Smith and her comments on enforcing the law when it comes to First Nations Treaty rights holders asserting their rights against Alberta separation and the upcoming referendum: "When we look at instances of civil disobedience we should look at the UCP party themselves. They're very lawless./ They seem to think that they're above the law. Introducing and passing legislation that protects themselves. Talking about the nations as if we're law breaking people. But we have that right to protect ourselves. And if our rights are threatened then we will make sure that they're protected."

Indigenous rights expert, lawyer, revered international Cree leader Chief Dr. Wilton Littlechild speaks about Treaties in Maskwacis earlier today, “The (Alberta) separatist movement is very fond of using that phrase ‘well you Indians, you gave up everything, you surrendered everything. Well that’s not true.” The treaties were witnessed by God, they are sacred, he says.

As the Alberta separation movement spreads misinformation about Indigenous rights, Dr. Bruce McIvor, lawyer and treaty expert, had a message for those hearing these claims: “You can push back on that. The biggest lie being perpetuated is that First Nations surrendered their land. That’s a lie, lie, huge lie,” he said at the Blackfoot Confderacy Treaty Unity gathering in Calgary on Sunday. Dr. Bruce McIvor is a partner at First Peoples Law LLP, where he represents Indigenous Peoples across Canada in both litigation and negotiation. He is widely regarded as one of Canada’s foremost practitioners of Aboriginal law.

He was called “number 65” at a residential school with an electric fence around it. Eighty-two years later, he’s brought a Pope to his knees in apology, helped write Indigenous rights into international law, and danced out of his walker in St. Peter’s Square. This is my tribute to my friend, Chief Wilton “Willie” Littlechild — one of the most revered Indigenous leaders this country has ever known. Read/Share it now on Indigenous Insider:

This is Prissa. She showed me the tarp she is living under in Edmonton last night in -33 weather. She said she and her boyfriend keep warm with candles while huddling underneath. She said she avoids the shelters and explains why in this video. Her tent and belongings were thrown out by city officials in December.

Mikisew Cree First Nation Chief Billy-Joe Tuccaro addresses a press conference on Parliament Hill in Ottawa this morning announcing findings from an independently commissioned health study showing cancer rates in Fort Chipewyan are at least 25 percent higher than the rest of Alberta. Fort Chipewyan is located downstream from the largest industrial project on earth- the Alberta oil sands. “For too long the almighty dollar has ruled Alberta,” he said. “For too long my people have been collateral damage.” Head here for full story at Indigenous Insider:

*Content warning: Survivors of Indian residential school’s are spoken about mid-video by Danielle Smith.* I used to write her speeches. I believed her. Now I’ve read the record -and it tells a different story. Alberta’s Premier threatened First Nations chiefs with jail for defending their treaties. Two courts said her government violated the constitutional duty to consult. Chiefs’ letters go unanswered. But in 2013, on the floor of the Alberta legislature, Danielle Smith predicted exactly this crisis. In her own words. On the record. She knew. I went back to the Hansard documents E so you don’t have to. The full piece is up now on Indigenous Insider. Read it. Share it. The record doesn’t lie. Read/Share here:

I’ve never seen Chief Adam cry. This is tough to take in. He’s fought 4 so long 4 the rights of his people; against industry, land/water being poisoned by oilsands. Now, the whole community of Fort Chip evacuated by boat & plane because a raging fire is at their back door. He stayed to help save it #ClimateEmergency

Incredible news out of Lakota territory! The mining company took off- they withdrew their stakes. The Lakota stood their ground in prayer, law and the support of thousands. This must be a blueprint for other territories that are on the precipice of desecration.

TRIGGER WARNING-VIOLENCE/LANGUAGE A 16-year-old Cree teenager was falsely accused of theft at Guilford Mall in Surrey, BC on November 12. According to her father (whom I’ve spoken to) she was targeted by mall security. The teen was with two friends who were non-Indigenous and not targeted. Her father said she was released by security afterwards, no charges. He says the family plans to pursue legal action, “Despite showing she had nothing stolen, these guards singled her out and used excessive force on her—causing emotional trauma and distress. We’re taking legal action for assault, false imprisonment, and racial discrimination. This incident isn’t isolated; it reflects a disturbing pattern of racial profiling against Indigenous youth across Canada.”

Have you heard about the largest toxic spill in Alberta’s history? And it’s happening now? An Indigenous community was kept in the dark for almost a year and is now bearing the brunt of this disaster. As usual Indigenous Nations are used as sacrifice zones while mainstream looks away. *CORRECTION: Fort Chip is downstream from oil sands, not upstream.

TRIGGER WARNING: Did you know that Canada’s most well-known and horrific serial killers is up for day parole today? Robert Pickton, AKA the infamous pig farmer that murdered dozens of vulnerable women near Vancouver, over half of which were Indigenous, chopped their bodies up and is said to have fed their human flesh to customers. Baffling he could even be considered for parole.

This was remarkable to witness tonight. Bear Claw Patrol, an Indigenous led outreach to the unhoused in Edmonton, put up a 61-year-old woman named Joanne in a hotel. They found her in pain and cold waiting to get in the Bissell Center (it was -33 out), but it wasn’t open for a couple hours. Joanne is originally from Quebec and has been homeless for three years. She was so grateful to have a warm room, bed and excited to take a hot bath.

Danielle Smith whitewashed version of how so-called Canada was founded left out truths which “might help shape the future of where we are going” & as she’s the leader of my home province, it’s time for her to face the facts instead of perpetuating an inaccurate, harmful fantasy

WOW- Fire words from Mikisew Cree Chief Billy-Joe Tuccaro “You will not do what you want without the approval of the Treaty people. You talk about a reset with Canada? First you must reset with the Indigenous Peoples of Turtle Island” From earlier today at a press conference held by Treaty Chiefs in opposition to measures of the provincial government implementing Bill 54, which could open the doors for Alberta to separate from Canada.

As an Indigenous journalist with family residential school trauma, I'm exposing Poilievre's Pierre Poilievre defence of Aaron Gunn Aaron Gunn - who dismisses genocide & bullied land defenders I witnessed firsthand. When Indigenous leaders spoke up, Poilievre called it "misinformation." This shows exactly what kind of PM he'd be. Truth matters. #ReconciliationMatters

This is how people are killed when police arrest them. Teyen Bohnsack, who is Native, was supporting the unhoused community encampment yesterday where police were enforcing a City of Edmonton injunction to dismantle homeless communities. VIOLENTLY arrested by Edmonton Police This force is out of line. This footage is just before he was tased several times. He was later released from jail with a badly injured knee. Tax payers, this is where your money is going to- violence & displacement against vulnerable communities. (I did not record this footage, I had left just before this happened)
