Cara Currie-Hall, of Montana First Nation, in Maskwacis, AB, a renowned political strategist in Indian country who advises treaty chiefs in Alberta. Currie-Hall says premier Danielle Smith is creating a constitutional crisis that will affect all of Canada because of her support of the Alberta separatist movement: “Danielle Smith, the infamous premier of Alberta, who is accommodating separatists because they’re cranky and mad- at everything. And they’re trying to take our land and make another country…the chiefs have told her it’s a fantasy…she’s trying to make a deal, on our resources, Alberta resources, treaty resources that belong to us, with the United States of America.” Currie-Hall is the co-founder of Rock the Indigenous Vote. Sturgeon Lake Cree Nation Chief Sheldon Sunshine who initiated the First Nations lawsuit against Alberta separatist groups, the Alberta government and Canada (and won) gave an update in Maskwacis today. “Alberta cannot do this (separation referendum) unilaterally. Doing so would be a breach of treaty.” He says what the Alberta government is doing is enabling and allowing the separatists. “We also named Canada (in the lawsuit), for doing nothing.” Even though Canada is the Treaty partner with First Nations, it has done nothing so far.

We had an incredible celebration yesterday at the Royal Alberta Museum, and I encourage all of you to attend additional events and programs happening throughout Alberta this weekend. This is a meaningful occasion to strengthen relationships and continue walking together with Indigenous Peoples in the spirit of reconciliation.
