I admit I got choked up during this song.

Prine-tober at Evil Speakers continues with a discussion re: 1984’s AIMLESS LOVE, the start of John Prine’s “indie artist” period and a beautiful collection of country heartbreakers like “The Oldest Baby In The World,” sung here with Bobby Bare in 1985.

Interesting tidbit from my This Is Lorelei interview: He says there are loads of references to (or parodies of) The Who's "Baba O'Riley" in his music.

My favorite use of a Springsteen song in a movie.

The great Philip Seymour Hoffman died 10 years ago today. Thinking about one of the greatest “one scene only” performances of all time.

Hey, my book IS THIS IT has been out for 10 days now. Thanks to everyone who has checked it out so far.

My book IS THIS IT comes out on September 8, just under two weeks from today. I recently unboxed a package of books from the publisher to take an early look. You can PREORDER TODAY to ensure IS THIS IT is in your mailbox ASAP.

Honestly the Garth Hudson entrance here is probably the single greatest moment in any rock concert film. Especially because it’s reserved for Garth Hudson, supremely unassuming genius.

The first trailer for A COMPLETE UNKNOWN (dir. James Mangold)

The best needle drop by anybody, maybe. Single-handedly made me a lifetime Stones fan.

One of the funniest scenes in a TV show ever.

This clip of Vanilla Fudge playing “Keep Me Hanging On” in 1968 has been in my regular rotation lately. I’m convinced it’s the original “dudes rock!” moment. The purity of the dudes and their rocking is unmatched.

RIP David Johansen. This is rock n roll.

Deerhunter Month continues at Evil Speakers with 2010’s HALCYON DIGEST, possibly their best regarded album and definitely the slickest. Among the topics of conversation is “Desire Lines,” my favorite indie rock song of the 21st century.

Radiohead covering Cinnamon Girl

Historical footage of Jesus rising from the grave on Easter morning.

What’s the greatest fictional band of all time?

Sweet Jesus.

Thinking about “Box Of Rain” in FREAKS AND GEEKS.

Jonathan Bernstein’s recent Justin Townes Earle biography is a riveting book about a talented, troubled guy. It sent me down the rabbit hole of his work, which I wrote about this week.
