A sample vid of NYPD cars, vehicles & garbage trucks causing massive pinch points during the first Manhattan #SummerStreets. It was dangerous & uncomfortable in places. Some intersections the road were reduced by ~75%! Everyone was talking about it. People are deranged. So many posts recently where cranks cry how bus lanes congest the city and...well here are a few quotes... "Clog up fire trucks" "Make your ambulance 10 minutes late" "Keep NYPD from responding like the libtards love" Sorry. Bus lanes are GREAT for emergency vehicles.

Here I am in 2006 on Lafayette Street encouraging the city to explore making the striped #bikenyc lane into a protected one. It took a long while but they did. And now NYC DOT is going to make it TWO-WAY and substansially widen it! If you had told 20 years ago Clarence Eckerson Jr. = @streetfilms.bsky.social we'd get a 2-way super wide protected path through the heart of lower Manhattan....wow! Just WOW! The Grand Army Plaza news from NYC DOT is amazeballs! Streetfilms (Now 1,134+ films!) has been documenting GAP since 2006. Following a wave of advocacy much safer crossings & ample green islands were installed. I put together this 2006 vs 2011 look. GAP used to be a hellish place. Now it is better. Let's make it BEST! My kid and I rode MTA bus & trains (13 of them!) in the span of 4 hours (for fun, he maps out his ideas). Most of it was cool but this Q72 was a hellacious ride. Why? Late. Packed. EVERY stop from Roosevelt to Queens Blvd had cars PARKED in the bus stops. I felt so damn bad for the people aboard who ride it regularly. It took us 27 minutes to go from Roosevelt/Junction to the Queens Blvd, a 1.4 mile distance we could have walked as fast. I hope one way Zohran Kwame Mamdani NYC DOT NYPD NEWS can help speed up buses is to start enforcing the law. It is ridiculous 1 person in a car can hold up 40 on a bus and make traveling worse! Advocates want Brooklyn's Carroll Street Bridge (reopening soon) to be car-free. Here's a look at the last time it was probably car-free: the Transportation Alternatives 2005 Century ride! After we did the 2005 version (I was the Brooklyn volunteer organizer) there were so many complaints about the cobblestones that I recall T.A. Central saying "never again". So I don't recall it being used since (though I haven't ridden every single event since 2005) it has been closed since 2021! One thing the crank opponents love to say is that #openstreets are bad for the physically challenged. But that's just not true. On 34AveOpenStreets for 1 hour walk I grabbed just a few quick shots of the dozens I saw with canes, wheelchairs, electric scooters & other assisted devices. It's like this daily. Ask users. A #SummerStreets thread. Today I'm certain it had more attendees than last Saturday. I've been fascinated with finding a way to measure it in a simple fashion. Today I decided at 10:30 am to stop at 66th Street. In this shot, in 53 seconds roughly 250 users are in frame (both sides)! Summer Streets is 8 hours long. There are roughly over 200 intersections over the course. 53 seconds is roughly 1 minute. It was extremely crowded like this for about 5 hours.
