During the Soviet period, it was closed by the Moscow authorities as part of Russia’s decades-long religious repression and turned into an organ hall. The cathedral survived the Soviet period, endured a fire during World War II, and withstood the impact of a Russian missile strike nearby in 2024 during Russia’s full-scale invasion.
