Pastors are expected to keep learning—just like doctors, teachers, and counselors. In this episode, Matt Smethurst and Ligon Duncan unpack formal and informal ways to stay sharp: carving out daily reading, using journals and courses, attending conferences, leaning on study Bibles, pursuing study leave or targeted coursework (ThM/DMin), and even teaching as adjuncts. They also warn against using degrees as an escape from ministry and offer practical counsel for staying current on cultural issues while remaining focused on your flock.

Two and a half years ago, a plane went down in a Texas pasture. On board were five men—the lead pastor, the executive pastor, an elder, and two faithful members of Harvest Church near Memphis, Tennessee. Four of the men were killed instantly—experts later determined the chances of survival were zero percent. But one of the men—lead pastor Kennon Vaughan—lived. He’d go on to survive an experimental surgery and bring the story of the crash back to his church. This is his story. But this is also the story of what happens when a church of disciple-makers walks through their darkest hours together. And this is the story of what God can do when lives—and deaths—are surrendered to him. 📝 ON THIS VIDEO: 0:00 Plane crash and initial reactions 1:47 Kennon Vaughn's background and faith 6:31 Discipleship and Downline Ministries 8:51 The day of the crash 20:50 Kennon's survival and rescue 40:08 Aftermath and community response 40:21 Long-term impact and spiritual growth This episode includes audio provided by StoryTellers Live, Harvest Church, and Gracepointe Church.
