Lake levels across the Tennessee Valley continue to be impacted by ongoing drought conditions. James Everett, General Manager of River Management, explains what we’re seeing across our lakes and rivers, and what to expect as we head into summer. Even with some recent rain, not all of that water is reaching our lakes. As a result, levels are lower than what we typically see this time of year. You can still enjoy time on the water - we encourage everyone to plan ahead and stay mindful of changing conditions. Stay up to date on lake levels anytime at or through the TVA Lake Info app.

‼️ We have some important information if you’re planning to head to the lake this Memorial Day weekend.‼️ The Southeast remains under severe and, in some areas, extreme drought conditions. Large portions of the region have received significantly less rainfall than normal this spring, resulting in below normal lake levels across the Tennessee Valley. Major tributary lakes including Norris, Douglas, Cherokee, Fontana, South Holston, Watauga, Boone, Blue Ridge, Chatuge, Nottely and Hiwassee are currently several feet below target summer pool levels. Lakes along the main Tennessee River, including Fort Loudoun, Watts Bar and Chickamauga, are also running lower than typical for this time of year. While rainfall is forecast over the next several days, the rain is expected to be spread out over multiple days and may not significantly improve lake levels, especially those that are well below target. Boaters should use extra caution on the water and watch for exposed rocks, debris and areas that may be shallower than normal. Plan ahead, check conditions before you go using our free Lake Info app and enjoy the weekend safely. 📲

⚠️ Winter Storm Fern Update: Our power system remains stable, and generating sites are performing well as Winter Storm Fern moves out of the region. Line crews are on the ground in Mississippi, Alabama, Kentucky and Tennessee assessing transmission line damage and working to restore service. We are working closely with local power companies to restore service in affected areas and coordinate restoration efforts. While the storm is moving out, extreme cold is expected this week. Icy patches and black ice remain a concern overnight, with temperatures dropping into the single digits and wind chills near zero.

We are managing record amounts of water from the French Broad, Nolichucky, and Pigeon Rivers flowing into Douglas Dam, holding that water back to protect downstream areas like Knoxville, Lenoir City, and even Chattanooga. In a controlled manner, we are releasing a record amount of water, over 450,000 gallons per second, using the dam's generating turbines and spillway gates. Douglas, one of our largest tributary dams, is stable and secure.

Heavy rainfall and flooding have left a lot of debris in Douglas Lake. To manage this issue, we are installing a one-mile-wide boom near Dandridge, Tennessee, to capture floating and submerged debris in the water. This work will contain the debris until we can work with our partners to remove it from the lake.

We are watching a weather system that could bring historic heavy rain to Western Kentucky and West Tennessee. Up to 12 inches of rain is possible in the most impacted areas over a 4-5 day period starting today. Before the rain starts, we're releasing nearly 1 million gallons of water per second from Kentucky Dam on the Tennessee River to create storage in the lake - which is expected to rise near summer pool elevations later this week. We are coordinating with the USACE LRD to help reduce potential flooding on the lower Ohio River. Stay tuned to local news media and the National Weather Service if you live in the impacted area. #KYWX #TNWX
