At Rocksteady, we stylized almost all face proportions a little btw, were very careful to keep the camera lens higher than 50mm, and tried not to film Harley from a lower unflattering angle. The lighting artist was also a genius at adjusting feathered edge lighting to reduce harshness on her face. The minute you scan a head in and leave it untouched, it just looks weird as hell in a videogame that also has stlightly stylized bodies, clothing, and environments. We spend a lot of time critiquing Game Design, we should also be able to Critique Art Direction of a game handles heads. Also - this was Unreal 4.

The PS2 era used to ask players to imagine a person. The PS5 era demands we prove one exists. I got into Character Art because of Tekken 3 and FFX, but my goal ism’t the same as the artists who inspired me. A PS2 hero took days to make. 5k polygons, two textures, no physics, no emotion. A modern one takes months. Hundrrds of thousands of polygons, dozens of 4k maps, facial rigs, cloth sims, subsurface, blendshapes, hair grooms. Artists used to guide the player’s imagination. Now we spend hundreds of millions trying to replace it.

11 years later and Assassin’s Creed Unity’s Crowd Bulk System is still the best crowd system I've ever seen. NPCs near the player had 300 animation bones,acted independently, and reacted in full detail, while distant ones had 11 bones and moved in simplified groups that followed shared rules. They would blend up and down as you got closer. This sorcery along with AI scaling, kept THOUSANDS of characters moving semi-naturally, creating the illusion of living crowds without giving us garbage performance. What I would give to see this tech in more modern games, Final Fantasy towns especially.
