This cow has been with us for 7 years, she’s calved every year. She’s one of the quietest cows on the farm. This is why you should never trust any of them. Last night wasn’t a good one. Dani is ok, just bruised, but if she was lone working it could of been different. Hellish.

🚜 Who do we think we are these days? 🚜 6 years ago we drilled our first 30 acres of barley. Using none of our own gear and fair to say, they were fairly mediocre crops, not because of how they got drilled but because we didn’t have the timings right. But you have to start somewhere. Fast forward to today, we will have 150ac of arable in the ground by the middle of next week for summer harvest. All using our own gear. It might not be a 5 or 6 furrow plough and it’s not a 4-6m drill but it does our job just grand. Investing in our “new to us” gear has pushed the farm on more than anything. Around our area, timing is key to sowing crops, the weather window is so small

Day number 4 of heading to hell. I’m using a tractor, drilling ploughed land (barbaric 😱) I’m sowing barley, which i will use to make beef and also provide bedding for them. I know, i should have been growing almonds or Quinoa but remember,i’m going to hell. Happy Easter

6 years ago, we invested in Auto steer. It’s slowly starting to work. It does answer back, it does forget stuff and it does take a lot of feed (anything with sugar in) The next generation on a farm must learn from a young age to respect machines and understand them. I learned on a MF 135 with no power steering or door or roof or mudguards or guards in general.

Always try something new… Something we are always keen to do here is try different things. This year, we got chance of some raw chips. Ideal for finishing cattle, so we thought let’s try clamping some with the first cut. So we got 150t of chips delivered the week before we cut, to let the water drain out of them. As the silage was going in Jake was scattering them around the pit with the loadall. The theory is, it’s a way to store more starch while prices are reasonable but also adding it in to the fermentation of the silage should soften them and make them more like mash so it mixes better through the grass. Time will tell, it might be a waste of time. But if you don’t throw the dice you never know what might of happened.🍟
