Nunzio on Insight with Chris Van Vliet today dropped one of the wildest “how the hell did that happen” stories. Blizzard hits, December 26, MSG house show. Half the crew (including the refs) can’t make it. Tommy Dreamer hits him up out of the blue: “You think you can get to the Garden? They need a referee.” Nunzio’s like “alright, I’ll try.” Drives through the snow from Rockland County, parks, walks in… and he’s the only referee that showed up. Vince is there (rare for a house show), Dean Malenko’s the agent, Johnny Ace is around. Nunzio ends up working pretty much the whole card. After the show he comes back through the curtain, Vince thanks him, asks what he’s doing now, and then… everybody’s gone. Nunzio’s standing there thinking “guess I don’t get paid for this… but it was fun.” A little later Johnny Ace calls: trial run as a referee. He ends up doing it for about a year.
