This defendant put American sailors’ and Coast Guardsmen’s lives at risk while attempting to evade U.S. sanctions and move illicit oil. By refusing lawful orders from the U.S. Coast Guard and leading them on a chase across the Atlantic Ocean, he not only obstructed federal law enforcement, but forced our service members to carry out a dangerous boarding operation in heavy seas. Today, a major win for justice. The D.C. Circuit ruled that Abu Khatallah's 28-year sentence for his role in the 2012 Benghazi attack was too lenient and sent the case back for resentencing. This decision affirms that sentences must reflect the seriousness of terrorism offenses and ensures greater accountability for those who attack Americans. Another important victory for my office and for the pursuit of justice.

Today, we are releasing video already provided to U.S. District Court showing Cole Allen shoot a U.S. Secret Service officer during his attempt to assassinate the President at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner. There is no evidence the shooting was the result of friendly fire. The video also shows Allen casing the area in the Hilton Hotel the day before the attack. My office along with the FBI will continue this extensive investigation to bring Cole Allen to justice.
