He addresses the painful legacy of slavery, often called America’s original sin, and the systemic racism that still casts its shadow today. Today, on the feast of Sts. Peter and Paul, Pope Leo XIV blessed the pallium and placed it over the shoulders of new metropolitan archbishops at Mass in St. Peter's Basilica. Among the 35 archbishops were four from the United States: Most Rev. Mark S. Rivituso, Archbishop of Mobile; Most Rev. Ronald A. Hicks, Archbishop of New York; Most Rev. James R. Golka, Archbishop of Denver; and Most Rev. James F. Checchio, Archbishop of New Orleans. The pallium, a band of white wool adorned with crosses, is worn over the shoulders and signifies an archbishop's unity with the Holy Father and his responsibility to care for the flock entrusted to him. In his homily, Pope Leo XIV called Sts. Peter and Paul builders of unity and servants of the truth in charity, an example for every shepherd and every Christian. “Consecrated life is, not primarily about the work that religious do, but rather about the total consecration of one’s life to God.” In this 2012 Catholic News Service interview with then-Father Robert Prevost, OSA, now Pope Leo XIV, reflects on consecrated life and the evangelical counsels as a distinctive witness of vowed religious life in the Church. In 1997, Pope Saint John Paul II established the World Day of Prayer for Consecrated Life, observed each year on February 2 with the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord, also known as Candlemas Day, when candles are blessed as a sign of Christ, the light of the world. In the same way, women and men in consecrated life are called to reflect the light of Jesus Christ to all peoples.
