Oh look. A prehistoric swamp log with legs. This trail camera caught a large American alligator cruising through Florida Panther National Wildlife Refuge. It looks slow, but don’t be fooled. Over short distances, alligators can sprint up to about 11 miles per hour on land.

Alert: The roads are alive. And they are moist. Somewhere out there, a salamander just checked the weather and said, “Tonight’s the night.” Welcome to the annual amphibian migration, also known as Big Night. After spending all winter hunkered down, amphibians like frogs, toads, and salamanders emerge all at once and start marching toward their breeding areas. The problem is… roads exist. And Big Night often turns into Big Crossing. If it’s warm (above 40°F), rainy, and the ground has thawed, keep an eye out. You might see a spotted salamander or a determined frog making questionable life choices across the pavement. Someone cue the clown car music. What you’re seeing here is a group of ducks being released after receiving leg bands, each one stamped with a unique number. Duck banding helps us answer big questions about migratory birds: • Where do they go • How long do they live • How many are out there • And how well conservation efforts are working When a banded duck is later harvested and reported, it gives biologists critical data that helps guide hunting regulations, habitat protection, and population management across the country. You otter know: River otters were reintroduced at Big Stone National Wildlife Refuge in Minnesota in 1981. The effort was extremely successful and otter sightings are now common along area rivers where they primarily feed on yellow bullhead. 🐟

It's a shell-ebrity sighting. Diamondback terrapins are the only turtles in North America that thrive in the brackish estuaries along the Atlantic & Gulf of America coasts. Named for their diamond-like markings, no two are exactly alike & markings are different for each turtle.

This Florida panther mom is making moves... literally. She was spotted on a critter cam using a wildlife underpass beneath Alligator Alley (I-75). Mama panther making a few trips back and forth until the final clip shows her carrying one of her kittens in her mouth.
