Scorching testimony by Jennifer Kennedy, Esq. 🔔 End All Vaccine Mandates on California’s newest assault on parental rights. AB 1967 allows a child of any age, placed by her parents in a safe residential facility, to secretly file an application to leave that facility and become a ward of the state. “Facility” includes drug rehab, faith-based programs, wilderness therapy, and even some boarding schools. Imagine your drug-addicted 14-year-old is finally in treatment. Under AB 1967, he can secretly file to get out. Just because. Remarkable conversation between two men that touches on women’s boundary violations & young women’s struggles to accept their sexuality, yet somehow the men can’t (or won’t) see how it all connects to women. You know, the female kind. It shows how close some men can get to seeing the problem, only to keep wandering in the wilderness: 1) Jon Lovett brings up Sam Brinton, but the only comments are sarcastic: It was pretty exciting. Not a good look. It was fantastic. 2) Sedaris observes young women’s distaste with the word “lesbian,” but no deeper analysis here. 3) Sedaris correctly observes that “queer” doesn’t tell him anything and goes on to detail a story about a “queer 12 year-old.” Lovett dismisses this as an “edge case” and quickly changes the subject. Later in the conversation Sedaris mentions his irritation that “queer”includes people in heterosexual relationships, which is ironic since Lovett calls himself gay and is currently married to a woman. Ezra Klein calls the belief that women have a right to single-sex sports & spaces “fundamentally and morally wrong.” He admits most Americans disagree, yet lacks the theory of mind to imagine that millions might support single-sex spaces for reasons other than hatred or ignorance. He asks Ta-Nehisi Coates if he should try and win us over or compromise with us. This is the wrong question Ezra Klein. You need to first talk directly to us and try to understand our position. If Klein really wants to lead Democrats out of the wilderness, he needs to find the courage to invite women in the Democratic Party who disagree with him onto his podcast and actually hear our side. Kara Dansky is an obvious choice and would be a stellar guest. On a side note: Coates’s answer to all this is to talk about the Reconstruction?!?

Dr. Joseph Burgo, a gay clinical psychologist, works with detransitioned males who now understand they were gay young men fleeing shame around their homosexuality. SB 934 will make it dangerous for therapists to help gender-confused young people accept their bodies and avoid hormones and surgeries that can destroy sexual function. In April, Jonni S🦎, a young gay man, testified against this same bill. In his devastating testimony, he said that after puberty blockers and years of estrogen, he has never experienced an orgasm. Lawmakers passed it out of committee anyway. How much testimony will California Democrats ignore before they admit what their cowardice is doing to vulnerable youth?

“Once hate speech is recognized in law, government decides what counts as hate. And that definition shifts with whoever holds power. When justifying the need for this bill, Asm. Lowenthal talks about the very real problem of antisemitism. But suppressing or chilling people’s speech will not change anyone’s mind. People will not become less antisemitic because the government forces their mouths closed. We have data that tells us this. In fact, it can radicalize people more. In 1977, neo-Nazis announced they would march through Skokie, Illinois, a town home to thousands of Holocaust survivors. The town tried to stop them. The ACLU took the Nazis’ case. The lawyer who argued it was a Jewish man named David Goldberger. That is the America I believe in. The America that allows even the worst ideas to be spoken aloud, because the answer to bad speech is more speech, never less. The America that understands the difference between liberty and state control. The America that refuses to hand government the power to decide which views may be spoken and which must be punished. Both my grandfathers crossed an ocean to fight fascism. They came home to a country deeply imperfect, but committed at its core to freedom. They did not storm beaches and bleed in foreign fields so that, three generations later, their grandchildren would sit silent while the state chipped away at our rights. AB 1803 now heads to the CA Senate Judiciary Committee, and Women Are Real will be there to fight it every step of the way. The First Amendment does not defend itself. It survives only because, in every generation, people refuse to nod along.

Cathleen Quinn is a political prisoner held by the state of CA for daring to say she didn’t feel safe being housed with intact men. She was 3 weeks away from her release. And the state revoked her parole. It’s important that folks understand Cathleen was punished so harshly because she and Tomiekia Johnson were the first incarcerated women to speak against SB 132. The state needed to make an example of these two women. They needed to show ALL the other women housed in prison that they better shut up or they too would lose their job, their honor dorm housing, their parole, their everything. This tactic has been highly effective. But it is crumbling.
