SNOW-EFFECT SNOW?!? ❄️ As Arctic air surged south across deep snow cover in the Central U.S., it was able to pick up moisture, similar in concept (but weaker) to classic lake-effect processes. Once that cold airmass moved over snow-free, relatively warmer ground, low-level instability increased. That promoted rising motion and cloud formation, much like when Arctic air pours off the continent and out over the ocean. 🌨️ The end result: scattered snow showers and flurries showing up on radar across parts of MS, AL, TN, and KY.

Have you ever seen something like this? Check out this visualization of water flowing through rivers in the Lower Mississippi Valley as thunderstorms meandered through the region over the last 24 hours. The Streamflow products included with the MRMS suite from NOAA National Severe Storms Laboratory provide a one-of-a-kind way to visualize the evolution of heavy rain and thunderstorms. Streamflow - or how much and how fast water is flowing down rivers - is represented in units of volume per second and is available from 3 different water balance models: CREST, SAC-SMA, and Hydrophobic. NWS Meteorologists use these products to monitor the risk of flash flooding. You can access the full suite of FLASH products from MRMS on WeatherFront!

Radar imagery from last night’s storms confirms that the center of a violent tornado passed DIRECTLY over the mobile home park just north of Bogue Chitto, MS where multiple fatalities occurred. A reasonable estimate of rotational velocity at the time the tornado struck was ~75 kts with an upper bound of ~90 kts. Our prayers are with all those affected. 🙏

To emergency managers - we hope WF has enhanced your ability to quickly respond to hazardous weather with more detailed basemaps to pinpoint affected locations and a wealth of weather data catered to your mobile device. To broadcast meteorologists - we hope WF has provided high-quality data visualization for use on social media and given you a mobile resource for radar, satellite, and model data when you’re doing live coverage on air during severe weather. To weather hobbyists - we hope WF has helped you learn more about different weather data types and equipped you with an expanded set of tools to track storms as you build a deeper passion for meteorology and stay informed about what is headed your way.
