SNOW-EFFECT SNOW?!? ❄️ As Arctic air surged south across deep snow cover in the Central U.S., it was able to pick up moisture, similar in concept (but weaker) to classic lake-effect processes. Once that cold airmass moved over snow-free, relatively warmer ground, low-level instability increased. That promoted rising motion and cloud formation, much like when Arctic air pours off the continent and out over the ocean. 🌨️ The end result: scattered snow showers and flurries showing up on radar across parts of MS, AL, TN, and KY.

Radar imagery from last night’s storms confirms that the center of a violent tornado passed DIRECTLY over the mobile home park just north of Bogue Chitto, MS where multiple fatalities occurred. A reasonable estimate of rotational velocity at the time the tornado struck was ~75 kts with an upper bound of ~90 kts. Our prayers are with all those affected. 🙏
