14 years ago today, we chased this infamous multi-vortex tornado near Tushka, OK. Our only road was directly in the tornado’s path, with trees falling ahead of us and huge hail pounding the area behind us. It was one of the wildest chases I’ve been on!

In the spring of 2008, I had the opportunity to chase storms with the Doppler on Wheels (DOW) and the Tornado Intercept Vehicle (TIV). Initially, I volunteered to support the DOW team, but plans shifted, and the TIV group ended up needing my help instead. My role was to assist a Discovery Channel cameraman in safely capturing footage of the TIV being struck by a tornado. The catch was, we wouldn't have an armor-plated vehicle. As scary as it sounded, I was thrilled. It was the perfect excuse to get closer to tornadoes than I ever imagined—and that's exactly what we did. And it couldn’t have been more fun! Here’s the first tornado we encountered from the prolific Glen Elder-Tipton, Kansas tornadic supercell on May 29th.
