UPDATE: The body cam footage of YATP member Rebekah Massie's arrest during the Surprise AZ city council meeting has been released. Mayor Skip Hall ordered an officer with the Surprise Police Department to silence and expel Rebekah. She was formally charged over the incident. An elected official using violence to censor free speech should shock us all. Mayor Hall’s lack of respect for Rebekah and understanding of our Constitution has significantly impacted the Surprise community. Since then, the City of Surprise’s rule prohibiting complaints about city officials, the catalyst for Rebekah’s arrest, has been rescinded, yet Rebekah still faces criminal charges. You Are The Power supports Rebekah and her constitutional right to free speech and to ask the Government to redress her grievances. And here is how YOU can help. At the link in the next thread, we have provided an email template so you can email all the listed Surprise officials and urge them to dismiss Rebekah’s criminal charges with prejudice. Remind the government that our voices and dissenting opinions cannot be silenced.

The First Amendment’s use of the word "abridging” means governments — whether local, state, or federal — cannot restrict or curtail our freedom of expression. So why was Rebekah Massie, a You Are The Power member, unjustly arrested for simply exercising her right to free speech during her city council’s meeting in Surprise, Arizona, on August 20, 2024? Rebekah, a dedicated wife and mother, was forcibly removed from the meeting in handcuffs while speaking during a public comment section about her concerns over the city attorney possibly receiving a pay raise. Her ten-year-old daughter was present, witnessing this traumatic event. Mayor Skip Hall ordered an officer with the Surprise Police Department to silence and expel Rebekah. Imagine paying for your home for years, only to be told the land underneath it was never yours. Seniors at Marin Valley Mobile Country Club in Novato, CA are now at risk of losing their housing security after the city claims ownership of the land they believed they were working toward owning for years. Many residents are elderly, living on fixed incomes, and have few options if displaced. The residents paid to maintain this community themselves, not the city. YATP Operations Director Ryan Ralston spoke before the Novato City Council to stand with these seniors and support their fight for resident-controlled ownership and long-term stability

Michael and Tasha Patterson still need your help. Almost four years have passed since the state of Florida took the Pattersons' medically fragile children. A doctor misdiagnosed them with non-accidental injury. Since then, independent doctors have determined that the children have an underlying genetic health condition that can mimic abuse symptoms. They also concluded that the twins were not victims of abuse and that the case against Michael and Tasha was based on a medical misdiagnosis. Florida’s Department of Children and Families (DCF) and the statewide Guardian ad Litem’s Office (GAL) refuse to recognize the independent medical diagnosis and are pushing for the children’s adoption. These agencies are trying to persuade the Florida District Court of Appeal (DCA) that Michael and Tasha have exhausted all legal options and are therefore unable to appeal the adoption decision. The Patterson attorneys have also attempted to negotiate reunification, but their efforts have been ignored. In the thread below, there is a link to their landing page and a call to action. Earlier this year, paramedics were called to the home of LaJuanese Wilson Trannon. Despite their efforts to revive her, she was tragically declared deceased. What happened next added unimaginable trauma to an already devastating loss. During the response, someone on the scene (though it remains unclear exactly who) used LaJuanese’s phone to take a photo of her unclothed body. Her family later discovered this photo themselves. To make matters worse, medications were removed from her bedside table, making it impossible to determine whether an adverse medication reaction may have contributed to her death. Her son, LeMichael Wilson, appeared before the Memphis City Council to demand accountability and to push for reforms that would prevent any other family from enduring this kind of violation. While council members expressed sympathy, the City of Memphis has offered no real answers. LeMichael has been denied access to body camera footage, has not received the promised report, and continues to be refused even the most basic explanations. The family deserves answers. Memphis residents deserve transparency. And this systemic failure cannot be ignored. If you believe the City should release the footage, provide the report, and take action to prevent this from ever happening again, please take a moment to act.
