On behalf of the Government of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, I am honoured to announce the nomination of Dr. Taoheed Olufemi Elias as Nigeria’s candidate for election to the International Court of Justice CIJ_ICJ. Dr. Elias stands among the most respected figures in the field of international law, with a distinguished record of legal scholarship, decades of service to the global community, and a dedication to the principles of justice, equity, and the rule of law. His contributions embody the ideals upon which the ICJ was founded and the values enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations. Nigeria continues to prioritise dialogue and regional cohesion in its engagement across West Africa. I led a high-level Nigerian delegation to Burkina Faso on behalf of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu Bola Ahmed Tinubu to convey his message of solidarity to President Ibrahim Traoré and engage on shared regional priorities. The visit allowed us to review pathways for strengthening #NigeriaBurkinaFasoRelations and advancing regional integration. Through sustained dialogue, we also resolved the matter concerning Nigerian Air Force pilots and crew, reaffirming the effectiveness of diplomacy in addressing sensitive issues.

Simplistic labels don’t solve complex threats. On CNN, I made clear that terrorism in Nigeria is not a religious conflict; it is a regional security threat. This challenge goes beyond borders, and so must the response. Democracy in our region is best protected through early coordination, trust, and decisive collective action. At a joint press briefing with my Beninese counterpart, H.E. Olushegun ADJADI BAKARI, we reflected on the swift coordination between Nigeria and Benin that helped prevent an unconstitutional attempt to undermine democracy in Benin. From the outset, close communication between our governments and relevant agencies enabled a fast, aligned response. This experience offers a practical example of how regional partners can act when democratic order is threatened, not only in West Africa, but across the continent. For Nigeria, this approach reflects the priorities of our foreign policy under the 4D Tinubu Doctrine, where democracy remains foundational. Nigeria and Angola Sign Visa Waiver Agreement to Boost Diplomatic Mobility On the margins of the 39th Ordinary Session of the Assembly of Heads of State and Government of the African Union in Addis Ababa, I had the honour of signing, alongside my brother, Angola’s Minister of External Relations, Ambassador Téte António, the Agreement on Visa Exemption for holders of Diplomatic and Official/Service Passports between our two countries. This important step removes a longstanding barrier to official engagement and opens the door to faster, more efficient diplomatic exchanges between Nigeria and Angola. It reflects our shared determination to translate historic goodwill into practical cooperation that delivers real value for our institutions and our continent. Nigeria and Angola are bound by a deep and tested history of solidarity. From the era of Africa’s liberation struggles to today’s evolving continental priorities, our partnership has remained steady and purposeful. This Agreement builds on that legacy and positions both countries for more agile collaboration in the years ahead. Exactly one month ago, Abuja hosted the inaugural West Africa Economic Summit #WAES2025, bringing together leaders, policymakers, and business voices from across the sub-region to chart a new course for trade, industrialisation, and regional competitiveness. The outcomes were clear: West Africa is ready to take decisive steps toward economic sovereignty. From hard-hitting conversations on commodity exchanges and infrastructure financing to actionable strategies on scaling up agro-processing zones and strengthening market linkages, the Summit delivered real frameworks for regional economic transformation. Key highlights: - Bold recommendations to improve intra-regional trade and reduce dependency on external markets. - Strategic alignment with the AfCFTA, creating pathways to unlock West Africa’s industrial and manufacturing potential. - Strong advocacy for financial innovation, youth entrepreneurs, women-led businesses, and inclusive development. - Concrete commitments to scale infrastructure, power, and logistics; critical building blocks of regional prosperity. - Cultural diplomacy was on full display, proving that our unity runs deeper than economics.
