When she asked, “Why aren’t South Africans fighting against white foreigners as well?” I was genuinely annoyed because it completely misses the point. White South Africans or foreigners generally aren’t competing with illegal migrants for limited public resources. Most don’t live in townships or informal settlements where the pressure on public clinics, schools and low skilled jobs is felt most. Poor black South Africans do. That’s why this issue is experienced differently. It’s not about race. It’s about who is directly affected by the competition for already stretched public resources. People who live side by side with illegal migrants and rely on the same public services are naturally going to have different concerns from those who don’t. Their experiences deserve to be acknowledged, not reduced to accusations of xenophobia. I don’t know why she and everyone including the government and politicians don’t get it. I’m not directly affected by illegal immigrants but I can’t dismiss the lived experiences of people who are affected by them.

Headlines repeatedly frame concerns as “anti-immigrant” or “xenophobic,” even when many people are specifically talking about illegal immigration and the enforcement of existing laws.@SAEditorsForu Journalism should inform the public, not selectively shape the narrative. Accuracy, context and accountability matter, especially on issues as sensitive as immigration. Something needs to be done about Mail & Guardian they can’t get away with this.

This is the kind of measured leadership Ghana deserves. At a time when countries from South Africa to Libya are grappling with the consequences of illegal migration, leaders need clear thinking, sound policy, and diplomacy, not emotion. After hearing Hannah Tetteh speak, it’s hard not to think she’d make a stronger Foreign Affairs Minister than Sam Okudzeto Ablakwa. Ghana deserves sober, well-reasoned leadership. John Dramani Mahama

It’s painful to think that almost every town and city in South Africa once had a functioning train station connected to a national rail network. People could live in one town and work in another because affordable transport made it possible. Today, many of those stations stand abandoned, vandalised and dilapidated. Rail lines that once connected communities and drove economic growth have been left to decay. We had infrastructure that many developing countries could only dream of, yet decades later we’ve gone backwards while others surged ahead. The collapse of our rail network is one of the biggest failures of the ANC era, and ordinary South Africans are paying the price.
