Four miles into Picayune Strand and the swamp won. Rented Bronco Sport. Water crossings the whole way in, one nearly four feet deep. Then this lagoon stopped us cold. The state of Florida just finished a major hydrologic restoration here. Watching this thing hold water in a drought tells you it's working very well. I seriously need to look into higher clearance and a snorkel rig.

At long last. The bison of Florida! This was a crazy experience mostly because of how daring it was to cross the muddied Alachua basin and we hiked between herds of wild horses and eventually a surprise encounter with boar.

Mike got a fantastic capture here! I've only photographed this younger Great Blue Heron feasting on an invasive Mayan cichlid in the Everglades. Great Blue Herons are voracious in their appetites and will eat anything from fish to juvenile alligators and even other birds and small mammals. Again, thankful I am not a fish!
