Passed through #UniteTheKingdom as it’s on my way to the spa… A Bob Marley song is currently playing. The vibe is actually similar to the Notting Hill Carnival, just British instead of Afro-Caribbean. I smell weed, see some dilated pupils, lots of booze, cheerful singing and chants of “Keir Starmer’s a wanker” Mostly white, some black and brown faces. Not threatening at all at present. If a terrorist attack on Muslims had taken place inside a mosque during Eid, would Jews and pro-Israel supporters have marched in the streets? Yet yesterday, after a terrorist attack against British Jews, we saw the pro-Palestine brigade calling to “globalise the intifada” and chanting “from the river to the sea, Palestine will be free.” I say this as someone who is broadly pro-Palestine, a believer in a two-state solution, and someone who has been deeply critical of Israel’s response to October 7th. Cuff me, but Labour’s U-turn on means-testing the Winter Fuel Allowance is a real disappointment. If you’re serious about lower taxes and a smaller state, you have to reform the big three: pensions, welfare, and health. No reform there = no tax cuts. Ever. And that applies to both Conservatives and Reform UK. If you flinch at scrapping universal handouts, you’re not a supply-side reformer. You’re not even a believer in lower taxes. You’re economically illiterate. Based on this, I can only assume neither Kemi Badenoch’s Conservatives nor Nigel Farage MP’s Reform UK are serious about Britain’s economic future. Though I’d love to be proved wrong!
