KARACHI: Hamdan’s mother thought she would finally give him the clothes she clutches on the day his remand was due to end. When he was eventually produced in CTD custody, his mother felt a strange relief. Jail, at least, meant he was alive. For fifty days, she waited to hand him the clothes but the CTD handed her his bullet riddled corpse. Today, the SHC has ordered an inquiry into Hamdan Baloch’s custodial death.

Before Aurat March could utter a word about the disappearance of Baloch women and underage girls, Sindh Police locked down Karachi Press Club and charged at the crowd. If a veteran artist like Sheema Kermani can be openly assaulted, one can only imagine what could be happening to Mahjabeen and Nasreena Baloch in the state’s torture cells.

CM Maryam Nawaz is now preparing to deport the same Baloch women she once sat beside in 2021, when she said at D-Chowk: “When you’re out of power, you make grand promises. But when you’re in power, you become powerless. No matter how you got elected, how can these constraints be greater than your duty as a state? The state is supposed to be like a mother. At least tell them if their loved ones are in your torture cells or if they are dead so they can grieve.”

In January, the PPP allowed Sindh police to assault dozens of Baloch women in Lyari, including me. In March, it allowed Sindh police to beat and arrest female activists, civil society members and journalists, including me. In November, it allowed Sindh police to illegally detain me for doing my job. If the PPP doesn’t want police violence on women recorded, it should stop using women’s bodies as targets in Sindh and Balochistan.
