Tomorrow’s verdict in Islamabad won’t change the fact that the only thing on trial is the openly authoritarian state Pakistan has allowed itself to become.

But when you’re in power, you become powerless. No matter how you got elected, how can these constraints be greater than your duty as a state? The state is supposed to be like a mother. At least tell them if their loved ones are in your torture cells or if they are dead so they can grieve.”

In March, it allowed Sindh police to beat and arrest female activists, civil society members and journalists, including me. In November, it allowed Sindh police to illegally detain me for doing my job. If the PPP doesn’t want police violence on women recorded, it should stop using women’s bodies as targets in Sindh and Balochistan.

First, the Sindh High Court threw out Dr. Mahrang Baloch’s petition on a cop’s lie that the challan was already filed. It wasn’t. It took half a year to appear. By then the Supreme Court had entered the plot—listing the case, delisting it, then quietly sliding it back in so the defence wouldn’t turn up and the case could be dismissed for “non-prosecution.”
