The Offspring tearing through “Self-Esteem” at Glastonbury ’95 is peak punchy pop-punk chaos. Catchy as hell, a little bitter, and way too relatable, with the whole crowd yelling every line like it’s therapy.

Pearl Jam playing “Black” at Seattle’s Magnuson Park (Sept 20, 1992) is one of those shows where you can feel the air change. Eddie straight up admits it’s hard to sing, asks the crowd to help, and then the whole place carries it with him. Absolute goosebumps.

Kurt Cobain would’ve turned 59 today. Still wild how “Smells Like Teen Spirit” didn’t just launch Nirvana — it reset rock’s whole timeline. That SNL performance on Jan 11, 1992? Pure electricity. Thanks, Kurt. 🕯️

Portishead’s “Glory Box” (1994) is pure late-night smoke — vinyl crackle, slow-burn tension, and Beth Gibbons sounding both fragile and fearless at the same time. Seductive, bruised, and still hits like a confession.

Cake's "The Distance" (1996) isn't a victory lap — McCrea called it a song about the hollow feeling under the mask once the crowd shows up. The riff almost played nonstop, but he pushed to save it for the chorus instead.

Alice in Chains doing “Man in the Box” on ABC’s In Concert (1991) is unreal — Layne Staley sounds like he’s tearing the words out of himself, and Jerry’s riff just grinds straight through you. Pure early-’90s darkness, no filter.

The Smashing Pumpkins performing "Cherub Rock" live on MTV's Most Wanted with Ray Cokes in 1993. Billy Corgan wrote "Cherub Rock" as a response to critics who accused the band of selling out after signing with a major label. He later said the song was about trusting himself instead of "playing someone else's game." Fun fact: Corgan has also revealed that the song's iconic opening drum pattern was inspired by Rush's "By-Tor and the Snow Dog."

Alice in Chains performing "Man in the Box" on ABC's In Concert in 1991 is one of their best live performances. Layne Staley was incredible, and Jerry Cantrell's guitar tone is absolutely crushing. Have you seen it?

Harvey Danger performing "Flagpole Sitta" on Letterman in 1998. More than a one-hit wonder, this song perfectly captured the weird, anxious side of the late '90s.

L7's biggest hit still sounds as fierce today as it did in 1992. "Pretend We're Dead" wasn't about giving up—it was about refusing to stay silent. One of the defining songs of '90s alternative rock.

Scott Weiland could walk onto a stage, grab a microphone, and make “Interstate Love Song” sound just as powerful as the day it was released. One of the greatest frontmen of the ’90s.

Some of the best songs don't give you answers—they just make you question everything. "Garden" has always been one of those songs for me.

Smashing Pumpkins playing “Drown” live at Pinkpop ’94 is the band at full steam, right on the edge of blowing up. It’s raw, loud, and hypnotic, with that riff just looping you in while Billy sounds like he’s singing through static and emotion at the same time.
