I came face to face with Ratko Mladić in 1993 and today am reflecting on that time. We were brought up in the era of never again, and again was happening in Europe and the West. Democracies were doing nothing to stop what was happening in Bosnia. His death reminds me not just of the disaster that befell the West and Europe throughout the 90s, but reminds us also, this is happening again. Russia is trying to do the same thing in Europe. And it reminds me that we, the journalists, did our jobs. We kept this horror in everybody's sight in technicolor live television at the end of the 20th century, so that nobody could say we didn't know. I am proud of all the journalists who covered these crimes in real time and didn't let the West turn away, and built the ledger of evidence and accountability.

I noted that for the hostages who are finally home, it will take a long time for them to recover mentally and physically. But I regret also saying that they may have been treated better than many Gazans because Hamas used these hostages as pawns and bargaining chips. It was insensitive and wrong. From speaking to many former hostages and their families, like everyone I've been horrified at what Hamas has subjected them to over two long years. They've told me their stories of barely being able to breathe in the tunnels, not being allowed to cry, being starved and made to dig their own graves – and of course today, some of the hostages are coming back in body bags.
