Well, those cars look familiar! Thank you, Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay for, dare I say, your excellent judgment in selecting our automobiles! 🙂 We’re honoured to see our electric vehicles giving an extra ‘charge’ to the bonds between Bhutan & India… Dr. S. Jaishankar

Once upon a time, brands were about status. Then they became about identity. Today, increasingly, they’re about experiences. Pine & Gilmore saw this coming way back in 1998, in their famous HBR article, Welcome to the Experience Economy. And this young Indian brand, Comet, has clearly got the message! They’re not just selling sneakers. They’re letting you have a hand in creating them. Clever. Because the experience becomes as memorable as the product. I hope they give the established global sneaker brands in India a run for their money. I’m ordering a pair. Though I’d better keep a first-aid kit handy in case I knick myself with the knife! 🙂

Forgive me for still having an Asian Games hangover, but as I start this week, one story from the Games keeps coming back to me. Sujeet Kalkal was 9-2 down with less than a minute & a half left. Most of us have an inner voice that does the maths at a moment like this. I certainly admit to having such a voice. It assesses the odds and tells us when the rational thing is to accept defeat. Sujeet clearly has another voice. One that says: Not yet. He kept going. 9-2 became 10-9. And an Asian Games gold. The lesson goes well beyond the wrestling mat. When I look back, I realise that some of my key successes in business came when I listened to my other voice that fought the rational one and simply refused to throw in the towel. There are times to listen to reason. And there are times to tell it to wait. It ain’t over till it’s over. #MondayMotivation

My first reaction on seeing this was: AI. My second reaction, after checking: Good grief. It’s real. This is the Chambal Riverfront in Kota. For most of us, the name Kota probably brings to mind its huge coaching industry. And, sadly, the controversies around the intense pressure on students there. But this is a side of Kota I had absolutely no idea existed. 2.75 km along both banks of the Chambal. Ghats, promenades, fountains and some fairly spectacular public spaces. And apparently I’m not the only one who hasn’t discovered it. The riverfront is reportedly attracting only around 1,000 visitors a day. Why haven’t we heard more about it? Credit to Shanti Dhariwal, then Rajasthan’s Urban Development Minister, who drove the project, the Kota Urban Improvement Trust and architect Anoop Bartaria. Judging from these images, it certainly deserves to be better known. Kota just went on my Wanderer list. Anyone been there? Does the reality live up to the pictures? What a Founders’ Day experience at Chakan, Pune, yesterday. It’s our largest automotive plant. 25,000 associates. And with their families there, probably over 35K people thronging the campus in a wonderfully festive mood. The first time I’ve seen any of our facilities adopt the Republic Day format, with a parade and floats using our diverse range of vehicles to depict our culture. They even had me riding in a vintage Willys, generously loaned for the occasion by our well-wisher Ratan Singh. And I daresay some of those floats could have rivalled their Republic Day counterparts! But as always on Founders’ Day, the limelight was stolen by the children. And what’s remarkable is how many of them remember the experience well into their adult lives. I’ve often run into accomplished young people, now established in their careers, who unexpectedly tell me their parents worked at Mahindra Group & they still remember meeting me when they were children on a Founders’ Day outing. That, for me, is the real magic of Founders’ Day.

Six months ago, I shared the story of a patent filed by my grandfather, J.C. Mahindra, in 1918, for a two-cycle, opposed-piston engine designed to run on crude oil. I thought that was where the story ended. Clearly, the team at Mahindra Research Valley in Chennai had other ideas! As a labour of love, they decided to go back to that 108-year-old patent, interpret the drawings & actually build a working prototype of J.C.’s engine. And on Founders’ Day, they unveiled it & fired it up. I cannot adequately express my gratitude to the team that brought a piece of our history back to life. But more than nostalgia, I hope this engine serves as a reminder to every engineer and innovator across the Mahindra Group. J.C. Mahindra was, as my father and uncle used to describe him, a “tinkerer.” May we never stop tinkering. May we never stop imagining, experimenting & building. That would be the best tribute we could pay to our founders.

Today is the Equinox. At the magnificent Padmanabhaswamy Temple in Kerala, the setting sun performs a spectacle its builders engineered centuries ago by appearing, one by one, through the openings of its precisely aligned gopuram. Ancient astronomy & engineering but incredible precision. On the Equinox, all roads should lead to Lord Padmanabha. (Video courtesy Invis Multimedia)

I don’t often recommend travelling to locations solely for a culinary experience… Maybe this one is because my grandson is visiting & he’s a dosa fanatic. But I have to say, I’d love to be able to teleport the family to ‘Chutney Maami’ for grabbing this Sunday bite together. Or perhaps Swiggy or Zomato could start an inter-state drone delivery service…(yes, yes, I know the Dosa will wilt.. but who knows?) #SundayWanderer

This clip is from the 2026 Asian U23 Athletics Championships, held at the Sport Development Center Stadium in Ordos, Inner Mongolia, China, from 9–12 July 2026. Shravani Sangle, a 20-year-old sprinter from Maharashtra ran the final leg for India in the mixed 4×400 m China led going into the closing metres, & Shravani came from behind to pass China’s anchor just 0.10 seconds ahead. I was holding my breath watching that final lap. It didn’t look even conceivable that she would be able to catch up. But Shravan wasn’t willing to see finishing second to a powerhouse like China as inevitable & acceptable. She didn’t see the yawning gap as an impossibility. She was practising the art of the possible… Giving up wasn’t acceptable. Shravani is my #MondayMotivation

A final bell. A lifetime of service. I only just came across this moving moment from Bishop Cotton Girls’ School in Bengaluru, nearly a year after it happened. A school attendant, affectionately known as “Das Uncle,” was retiring after 38 years of service. On his final day, he checked his watch and rang the large school bell one last time. The students counted every stroke & then erupted in cheers and applause, joined by their teachers. The pride on his face & the depth of his bond with the school are unmistakable. I was moved too. When our schools nurture dignity and respect for everyone who serves their community, whatever their role, there is every reason to be optimistic about our future. 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽 #MondayMotivation

His family wanted him to become an engineer. Nikhil Palikar asked them to give him just one year to try and make a life out of playing the tabla. That one year never ended. Today, as stated in the video, he has performed over 2,500 times, played to audiences of more than 15,000 people & created a 16-member collective, mixing Indian classical and folk traditions with electronic and contemporary music. But what I applaud most is the courage it took at the very beginning to step off the beaten track. To resist the perfectly understandable pressure to choose a conventional career and give his passion a chance. I admit I’m a little partial to stories like this. I too resisted the conventional wisdom that engineering was the only sensible path post high school, & chose, as an undergraduate, to study filmmaking instead. It was my way of not conforming, & of giving my ‘right-brained’ inclinations a chance before eventually entering the world of business. And I suspect Nikhil’s choice has even more relevance today in terms of careers. In a world where AI will become extraordinarily good at many of the things we once thought only humans could do, I believe there will be growing value in things that are deeply human. Music. Performance. Creativity. Experiences that make us feel something. Careers built around those qualities may turn out to be far more durable than we imagine. So here’s to Nikhil for asking for that one year. And here’s to everyone with the courage to give the road less travelled a chance… #MondayMotivation Credit: thetablaguyy 310 on Instagram

An Indonesian YouTube channel called Albumology has built a fascinating library of retro Hindi classics, reimagined in Reggae/Ska. Using local Indonesian session musicians and vocalists, they’ve given these songs an entirely new cultural texture. I came across this rendition of Neele Gagan Ke Tale in a post by Shekar Iyer I couldn’t stop playing it on loop. It’s now downloaded and will become a permanent part of my road trip playlist. The original, in the immortal voice of Mahendra Kapoor, is, of course, beyond comparison. But this arrangement gives the song a universal feel. It’ll make you tap your feet, no matter where you come from. And listening to the lyrics again, I was struck by how beautifully they celebrate the natural world. Long before sustainability became a global movement, this song was already reminding us of our bond with the planet. Perhaps it deserves to be an anthem for that cause. #SundayWanderer
