MADISON, WI POLICE INVOLVED SHOOTING UPDATE: Madison Police Chief John Patterson said officers were initially dispatched around 1 p.m. for reports of a man checking parked vehicles. According to Patterson, officers located the man, who allegedly rode away on a bicycle before being stopped near Baldwin and Williamson streets. Patterson said the man either fell from or was removed from the bike before a struggle ensued. He said the man allegedly pulled a large fixed-blade knife, injuring one officer as police attempted to arrest him. Officers then attempted to use a Taser, which Patterson said was ineffective. The injured officer subsequently fired three shots, fatally wounding the man. Four officers were involved, but only one fired their weapon. The officer who fired is described as a veteran officer and has not been publicly identified. Madison police do not use body-worn cameras. The Wisconsin Department of Justice Division of Criminal Investigation is leading the investigation. Earlier witness accounts described a markedly different sequence of events, and investigators will now work to reconcile those accounts with the physical evidence.

DAUGHTER OF COREY RUIZ: "Never in a million years did I think I would see my father on a shirt, a pin, a necklace, on social media, saying he was shot and killed by a police officer. How can I call you knowing you shot my father? How are you gonna have 4 policemen on one Black man?" 📸: Andrew Mercado

Emotions boiled over during today’s Madison Police Department press conference as community members interrupted Police Chief John Patterson following the fatal police shooting of Corey Ruiz. The room reflected the grief, anger, and frustration many are feeling. One man took the microphone and refused to allow the chief to continue speaking, while another attendee argued they should let officials answer questions and be part of the conversation instead of shutting it down entirely. During his remarks, the man holding the microphone said: “When these police officers come down the street and they decide they want to take the life of another brown body, there is NO oversight for that. That’s imperialism, ladies and gentlemen.” The exchange underscored just how divided people are over what accountability should look like and how deep the pain and distrust runs after Corey Ruiz’s death. As the investigation continues, many in the community say they are still searching for answers, transparency, and justice. *Video edited in length*

A powerful moment unfolded during the vigil for Corey Ruiz when a young Black man called a boy named Dwayne to the front of the crowd. After a few moments, Dwayne's mother shared that his father, Dwayne Collins Jr., was shot and killed in 2022. The speaker told the child he mattered, that the community was standing together for him, and that he should always walk with his head held high. He vowed they would not allow another generation to be "taken away" or "drowned in the system," telling Dwayne that the entire community would help build him up because that's the future he deserves. 📸: Andrew Mercado

An animated Biddeford resident spoke to us about more than just what happened to fellow resident Joan Guerrero this week. He said his biggest concern is what it means for everyone’s constitutional rights, arguing that if the Fourth Amendment, which protects people against unreasonable searches and seizures by the government, is no longer upheld by law enforcement agencies, it affects every American, not just one community. 📸: Jon Farina 🎤: Andrew Mercado

During today’s protest in Maine, I spoke with a military veteran who brought up the story of Sascha Riley, an Iraq War veteran who has publicly alleged he was abused and trafficked by a network connected to Donald Trump and Jeffrey Epstein. While talking, he recounted a story from Sasha: “He took a wooden tent stake, he put a condom on it, I don’t remember if he said he lubricated it or not but he put it up Trump’s butt and then KICKED IT full force and rammed it up inside of Trump. They had to life flight him to the nearest hospital” (Riley’s allegations have circulated widely online but have not been substantiated) 🎤: Andrew Mercado 📸: Jon Farina

Corey Ruiz’s family spoke publicly for the first time since the 38-year-old was killed by Madison police on July 22. Fighting back tears, his mother, Elsa Ruiz, called him an “exceptional man” who loved his daughter and family, saying, “He did not deserve to be taken out like that. They took my baby from me.” Attorney Ben Crump, representing the family, called the shooting an “unjustified execution” and vowed to seek justice. 📸: Andrew Mercado

Tom Evenstad, who is currently campaigning for governor of Minnesota, was met with a less-than-warm reception outside the Warren E. Burger Federal Building during a rally supporting the 15 people recently indicted in connection with Operation Metro Surge. Evenstad, who was convicted of raping an 18-year-old woman and later pleaded guilty to stalking multiple people connected to that case, spent part of the event filming protesters. Many in the crowd recognized him and responded with horns, chants, and cameras of their own, making it clear they did not want him in the space. After the event, Evenstad emailed Mercado Media threatening legal action over coverage and criticism. The email included personal insults directed at me while again insisting he is a legitimate candidate for governor of Minnesota. 📸: Andrew Mercado

I am outside the ICE facility in Portland — it’s calm and orderly with a few peaceful demonstrations. Despite claims from President Trump and right wing media, there is no ‘warzone’ here. The situation on the ground doesn’t match the rhetoric. I’ll continue to provide live coverage and updates on the ground.

NEW VEHICLES INCOMING WHIPPLE BUILDING : More new vehicles are being brought into the Whipple Building area at Fort Snelling today. After officials suggested the surge was winding down, the continued movement of equipment is raising fresh questions about what “over” actually means. If operations were truly scaling back, why does the footprint still appear to be growing?
