MADISON, WI POLICE INVOLVED SHOOTING UPDATE: Madison Police Chief John Patterson said officers were initially dispatched around 1 p.m. for reports of a man checking parked vehicles. According to Patterson, officers located the man, who allegedly rode away on a bicycle before being stopped near Baldwin and Williamson streets. Patterson said the man either fell from or was removed from the bike before a struggle ensued. He said the man allegedly pulled a large fixed-blade knife, injuring one officer as police attempted to arrest him. Officers then attempted to use a Taser, which Patterson said was ineffective. The injured officer subsequently fired three shots, fatally wounding the man. Four officers were involved, but only one fired their weapon. The officer who fired is described as a veteran officer and has not been publicly identified. Madison police do not use body-worn cameras. The Wisconsin Department of Justice Division of Criminal Investigation is leading the investigation. Earlier witness accounts described a markedly different sequence of events, and investigators will now work to reconcile those accounts with the physical evidence.

Emotions boiled over during today’s Madison Police Department press conference as community members interrupted Police Chief John Patterson following the fatal police shooting of Corey Ruiz. The room reflected the grief, anger, and frustration many are feeling. One man took the microphone and refused to allow the chief to continue speaking, while another attendee argued they should let officials answer questions and be part of the conversation instead of shutting it down entirely. During his remarks, the man holding the microphone said: “When these police officers come down the street and they decide they want to take the life of another brown body, there is NO oversight for that. That’s imperialism, ladies and gentlemen.” The exchange underscored just how divided people are over what accountability should look like and how deep the pain and distrust runs after Corey Ruiz’s death. WARNING ⚠️: GRAPHIC CONTENT Video shows a Madison, WI police officer shooting a man multiple times during an encounter on the city’s east side Wednesday afternoon. According to witness Michael Doubek, the man had already been tased, was nearly handcuffed, and was on the ground when officers yelled that he had a knife. Doubek said officers deployed another Taser, fell to the ground during the struggle, and then one officer got up onto one knee and fired three shots at point-blank range while the man remained on the ground. Madison police have confirmed an officer-involved shooting near Williamson and South Baldwin streets but have not yet released additional details about what led to the encounter. The investigation is ongoing

I am outside the ICE facility in Portland — it’s calm and orderly with a few peaceful demonstrations. Despite claims from President Trump and right wing media, there is no ‘warzone’ here. The situation on the ground doesn’t match the rhetoric. I’ll continue to provide live coverage and updates on the ground.

Tom Evenstad, who is currently campaigning for governor of Minnesota, was met with a less-than-warm reception outside the Warren E. Burger Federal Building during a rally supporting the 15 people recently indicted in connection with Operation Metro Surge. Evenstad, who was convicted of raping an 18-year-old woman and later pleaded guilty to stalking multiple people connected to that case, spent part of the event filming protesters. Many in the crowd recognized him and responded with horns, chants, and cameras of their own, making it clear they did not want him in the space. After the event, Evenstad emailed Mercado Media threatening legal action over coverage and criticism. During today’s protest in Maine, I spoke with a military veteran who brought up the story of Sascha Riley, an Iraq War veteran who has publicly alleged he was abused and trafficked by a network connected to Donald Trump and Jeffrey Epstein. A powerful moment unfolded during the vigil for Corey Ruiz when a young Black man called a boy named Dwayne to the front of the crowd. After a few moments, Dwayne's mother shared that his father, Dwayne Collins Jr., was shot and killed in 2022. The speaker told the child he mattered, that the community was standing together for him, and that he should always walk with his head held high.
