17 years ago today September 19, 2009, at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas Floyd came off a 21-month layoff and made the #2 pound-for-pound fighter in the world look completely out of answers. The fight was supposed to be 144. Floyd came in at 146 and paid Marquez $600k out of his purse. Marquez, who had never fought above 135, came in at 142. He dropped him with a counter left hook in the 2nd. Scores: 120-107, 119-108, 118-109. CompuBox: 290-69. Floyd landed more jabs (185) than Marquez landed punches the entire night. That’s what happens when elite defense, timing, and distance leave a great fighter with nothing to solve. Marquez is an all-time legend. On 26 July 1986, Mike Tyson scored the fastest knockout of his professional career. 30 seconds. Marvis Frazier never gets set. Tyson meets him in centre ring, drives him to the corner, and a right uppercut finishes it before Frazier can settle into the jab-and-move style that had carried him through most of his wins. That is what the fight shows. What it hides is the rest of the record. Frazier walked in 16-1. His only loss was a first-round stoppage to Larry Holmes. He had won six straight since, including James Tillis and James “Bonecrusher” Smith. After Tyson he won his last three fights and retired 19-2. The only men who beat him were Holmes and Tyson. Hearns 35-1, 32 knockouts, one loss to Leonard, moving up for a second world title.
