Last night, another Jewish synagogue in London was firebombed, this time in Kenton. This is the third such attack in as many days, and also comes after the recent ambulance arson attack and a supposed drone threat against the Israeli embassy in London this week. This is now becoming a terrifying spate of daily arson attacks on the Jewish community. It betrays a cataclysmic failure of the state – politicians, police chiefs and prosecutors – to tackle antisemitic extremism in this country, which has gone largely unchecked for two and a half years. Britain is fundamentally a different country now. Still the Government refuses to proscribe Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, an obvious first step to address foreign radicalisation and interference. It is shocking if apparent concern for the sensitivities of a violent Iranian regime is more important to the Government than the welfare of Jewish people in this country.

Several people from the Catholic community have written to us in disgust regarding the high-profile Catholic-interest podcast, Catholic Unscripted, which in the days prior to Passover and Christian Holy Week platformed the disgraced priest, Fr. James Mawdsley. In the episode, he seemed to blame the Jews for what he sees as all of the ills of the Catholic Church. “I think that the Jews have basically infiltrated the Church, destroyed her liturgy, her dogma, her morals.” “The Jews and the Devil are laughing at us.” The list of examples goes on. His Holy Week request? “No genuflection and prayers for the Jews, no matter what anyone else does.” Elsewhere, he has also previously said that “Adolf Hitler did not start World War II. “Met Police can go to hell.” Palestine Action and its supporters have sent a clear message: they have nothing but contempt for Metropolitan Police frontline officers. When a group of extremists takes to the streets to defend a soon-to-be proscribed terrorist group and protest against those who risk their lives to keep our streets safe, it is a frighteningly clear indication that something has gone very wrong in this country. The authorities have a lot to answer for. This ban on Palestine Action — as called for by CAA and others — is a good start, but it should have happened a long time ago, as should bans on these kinds of protests. Ash Sarkar tries to ‘correct’ Dr Myriam Francois as she says that Jews are privileged and wealthy. “Individuals” prompts Ms Sarkar? “Group” doubles down Dr Francois. It is part of her argument that Government funds are being unduly spent defending a minority against a secondary racism, using a classic antisemitic trope about Jewish wealth. It might be ironic were it not so darkly dangerous too. She is effectively arguing that because there are some Jewish billionaires in Britain, all Jews are therefore wealthy and privileged and they cannot possibly be as vulnerable or maligned as is being claimed. It is hard to know where the ignorance ends and the prejudice begins. Were Dr Francois to spend any time in Britain’s Jewish community, she would see families struggling with poverty, families that are comfortable, and families that are wealthy – just like any other community. In any event, nobody deserves to be maligned for their ethnic or religious background, regardless of their wealth. According to our analysis of Home Office figures, Jews are more than nine times more likely to be the targets of hate crime than any other religious group – and these figures are not even complete, such that the true scale is likely to be even worse. We have been made aware that last night on the London Underground, an identifiably Jewish man noticed a fellow passenger staring aggressively at him. The passenger then began blowing the vapour from his e-cigarette in his direction. After a few minutes, the man started recording the passenger, unsure of what may happen. The passenger stood up and sat opposite the man. In the ensuing conversation, the passenger said: “Your religion kills Muslims.” He also proceeded to refer to the man’s skullcap in saying: “You’re wearing the hat.” We believe it is possible that the passenger in question may be a minor, so we have blurred his face. He is described as a Middle Eastern male with a black ponytail between the ages of sixteen to twenty years old. British Transport Police is investigating and we are continuing to support the victim. The incident occurred between Camden Town and Chalk Farm on a Northern Line train to Edgware at approximately 19:45 in carriage number 52585. If you have information, please contact British Transport Police with crime reference number 2400026154 or e-mail investigations@antisemitism.org.

This is Jew-hatred without its disguise. This violent assault was captured by a visibly Jewish man who was going about his work. This is the current climate in the UK which has been bred by the inaction and appeasement from the authorities.
