The system relied on gravity-fed channels, aqueducts, and cisterns to bring water from the Darro River. The ingenious use of pressure and elevation allowed fountains to operate without pumps.

Another remarkable footage from that court is when he appeared for the first time before an investigative judge in July 2004, not in a public trial but a preliminary legal procedure. It wasn't meant to be videotaped, but somehow it was. He was equally defiant. He refused to recognize the authority of the court, challenged the legality of the U.S. occupation, and asked the judge to identify himself. When the judge said the court was established based on a coalition power decree, he replied, "I don't recognise the coalition; it's an occupation force."

Rape was a pervasive tactic used by french forces against Algerian women during the period of colonisation (1830-1962). It was a way to terrorise, a means to punch suspected FLN (National Liberation Front) members and also a method to impose change on Algerian social and family structures. And like all colonists and as we are witnessing these days, the french also manipulated accusations of rape to justify their authority. Stereotypes of Algerian men as "instinctive rapists" were spread/propagated to justify/rationalize French colonisation and settlement in Algeria.
