Having fresh fruit and vegetables on the Space Station is a rare treat. Space food requires a long shelf life so we only receive fresh fruits or vegetables during a new crew arrival or a resupply mission. Having a tangible reminder of life on Earth is a morale booster and a welcome addition to a somewhat repetitive menu. But for future astronauts on deep space missions this luxury simply won't exist. That's why space agencies are investing in plant growth systems and sustainable food solutions that can help support astronauts on future missions.

During my fifth spaceflight, I had the extraordinary privilege of hearing the first-ever live orchestral performance transmitted from Earth to the International Space Station. In an era filled with so many challenges, moments like this remind us of music's profound power to transcend boundaries and unite humanity across the globe.

The sho is a reed instrument used in Gagaku, a traditional type of Japanese court music that dates back over a thousand years. It was exciting to share a cultural tradition that blended the ancient with the cutting edge as a bridge between humanity's past and future. The Space Station isn't just a place for discovery, it's a platform that can unite people across distances and generations.

Spacecraft are hypersensitive to contamination and with the Space Shuttle's sensitive electronics, life support, and launch systems, NASA didn't want to take any chances on a stray hair or skin particle causing a problem. By the time our STS-119 crew performed our launch dress rehearsal (or terminal countdown demonstration), the closeout crew had already scrubbed the orbiter clean so we wore these cleanroom or 'bunny' suits to help preserve the sterile environment.
