We make rovers for the Moon & Mars!

No tire shops on the moon. These tires, built with strategic partner VENTURI Space, have been tested on 11 platforms, from NASA's Glenn Research Center to Switzerland. They go on FLIP, CLV-1, and every FLEX rover we build. The Moon doesn’t forgive untested assumptions. We test here so it works there.

Introducing Astrolab’s Crewed Lunar Vehicle (CLV-1), chosen by NASA to transport crew across the lunar surface and support the construction of a permanent lunar base. Adapted from our FLEX rover architecture reflecting NASA’s revised approach to lunar surface mobility, CLV-1 is designed to support astronaut operations, science activities, and cargo logistics on the Moon.

FLEX is ready to take on the lunar surface. With a 2-ton payload capacity, our FLEX rover is prepared to support the needs of the lunar economy and construct necessary lunar infrastructure. FLEX’s airless tires have survived multiple tests in environments analogous to the Moon’s harsh conditions, possessing the ability to navigate terrain up to a 26-degree slope. From serving as transport for astronauts to autonomously deploying scientific payloads to laying out cable to support power infrastructure, FLEX is flexible. Our lunar rover is up for whatever is needed to help humanity not just survive but thrive on the Moon.

When FLEX lands on the lunar surface, it will be the largest and most capable rover to ever travel to the Moon. But while getting there, it becomes much smaller! FLEX was designed to fill less cargo space during its ride to the Moon and deploy to full size once on the surface.

To explore large regions of the lunar surface, astronauts will need rovers. We're building the ultimate planetary mobility vehicle that will enable sustained human presence on the Moon, support construction of a Moon base, be the last-mile lunar logistics solution, and much more.

Artemis-era lunar rovers will be a big upgrade from those of the Apollo days! Apollo’s lunar roving vehicles (LRVs) were a marvel of engineering that paved the path for lunar exploration and set the stage for what our FLIP and FLEX rovers can achieve today. Let’s look at the vehicle specs: Apollo Lunar Roving Vehicle Range: Less than 100km Payload Capacity: Less than ½ ton Batteries: Not rechargeable Controls: Full manual Tires: Zinc-coated piano wire mesh tires FLEX-Lunar Terrain Vehicle Range: Thousands of kilometers Payload Capacity: More than 2 tons Batteries: Rechargeable Controls: Onboard autonomy (plus a 6-degree-of-freedom robotic arm) Tires: High traction, hyper-deformable airless tires Both vehicles were designed for two very different missions but together will mark crucial moments in the history of human presence on the Moon.

Congratulations to Blue Origin on the successful launch of their New Glenn rocket today! We designed our FLEX rover to work alongside landers like Blue Origin’s Blue Moon Mark 1 on lunar cargo operations. FLEX is the last mile lunar delivery solution, ready to handle the cargo brought by rockets and landers to the lunar surface. Best of luck to NASA as the ESCAPADE spacecraft begin their journey to Mars!

We’re reaching for the stars in the Lone Star State! Our expansion in Texas includes opening our space in the cutting-edge Texas A&M University Space Institute facility currently under construction at NASA’s Johnson Space Center. We were thrilled to become the first company to sign an agreement with the institute. Opening these offices is about more than just expanding our footprint—it's about strengthening our commitment to the Houston space ecosystem and driving economic growth in the region.

FLEX is ready to serve as the “picks and shovels” of the Moon rush. Able to operate by itself or as a team of rovers, FLEX can transport, deploy, and work with everything from power sources to cables to living modules in order to support the needs of the growing lunar economy.

Since the initial design of the modular FLEX rover, Astrolab has focused on developing a mobility solution to meet the near- and long-term needs of the lunar economy. Use cases include everything from transporting large payloads on the lunar surface in lander-agnostic containers to deploying essential lunar infrastructure. Activities like rolling out cables are crucial for establishing and connecting alternative power sources on the Moon. For example, cable roll-out is key in the deployment and operations of fission power systems and other critical infrastructure. Early in rover development, we performed field tests of custom payloads that could support power and comms infrastructure, collect samples, and facilitate the use of lunar resources. These tests informed the development of our design to ensure FLEX is as “flexible” as possible.

More than a year of work on the FLEX-LTV design culminated last month with a week of detailed presentations and demos to NASA for the Lunar Terrain Vehicle Services contract Preliminary Design Review. From showcasing the FLEX rover's hardware and the tests we have put it through to our mission control setup to our FLIP test vehicle, we were proud to exhibit what our team has created. In addition to welcoming representatives from NASA, we were joined by our partners from Axiom Space and Odyssey Space Research who have contributed invaluable work to making FLEX the highly capable rover it is today. Thanks to our partners, NASA, and our hardworking Astrolab team!
