Speaking of love letters to the web, here's Ladybird trying its best to render this year's Shopify BFCM page 🤓💚 I had to hack our animation system to get it running, the little virtual PC doesn't work, and our Wasm performance is downright sad, but hey... pinball! 👨🚀

Did you ever wonder who invented browser tabs? 🤔🌐 Turns out it was a little browser called InternetWorks by BookLink Technologies! BookLink was later acquired by AOL. I tracked down version 70(!) of InternetWorks and got it running on Windows 95. The default home page is delightfully "90s web design", and it came with a bunch of recommended web sites to visit. This was before CSS, but the browser actually allowed you to change the style of each individual HTML tag. I tested this feature in the video and even ran into a bug (changing H1 to a font with different metrics keeps using the old metrics until you reload the page!) 😅

Two days later, and Quake 2 is already looking wayy better in Ladybird (Wasm + WebGL2) 😎🔥

Playing Om Nom (HTML version) in Ladybird 🐞🔪🪢 I remember being very impressed when this came out back in 2012(?). It felt like the web was finally gonna fill the shoes of Adobe Flash! Getting it to run in our new browser 13 years later, I'm once again impressed, but this time by our team for making it not only run, but run well! 🤓🌠

First look at Figma running inside Ladybird! 🎨🤓 Bottom left window is Ladybird, top right is Chrome. There are numerous correctness and stability issues but we'll work our way through them! Video from Lubrsi who fixed a million WebGL issues to make this happen 🫡🚀

While I have Solaris 7 up & running, let's also take a look at Amaya, an old web browser/editor from the W3C itself. 🤓🌐✍️ Amaya existed for many years but was sadly discontinued in 2012. More history here: Here's a clip of me using Amaya 4.0 for Solaris, released in Nov 2000. At the end, I press Ctrl+X, Ctrl+S, which is the save shortcut. That's what causes the right (HTML source) window to synchronize.
